Re: what he said about the steelworkers' union being one of the first to fight racism and include all workers:
I'm proud to say that my grandfather, an Irish immigrant who was a union organizer in the steel mills in the Pittsburgh area back in the '30s and '40s, was a part of this. My dad has a journal that my grandfather kept of his union activities. One of the most moving entries in the journal concerns a big union convention/meeting in Cincinnati (I think - I know it was in Ohio). The hotel where the convention was being held had promised the organizers that black conventioneers would be accomodated, but one morning it came to my grandfather's attention that blacks were being kept out of the hotel lunchroom or cafeteria. He was incensed that such discrimination was occurring, and some sort of sit-in or protest was organized (it's been a while since I read the journal). Helen Gahagan Douglas was at the convention, and became involved in the protest against the hotel to accomodate black attendees. The hotel did eventually relent.
This was in the 1940s - my grandfather died in 1947- two decades before the civil rights movement.

I truly appreciate all the information that my fellow Americans on this and other boards take the time to post. This is truly inspirational. I have seen as many of you have the systematic destruction of the working middle class by Republicans who are dedicated to returning the working class to virtual servitude by overturning FDR's creation. I see Obama and the Democrats as the last hope for the middle class working American. I am one of those fortunate Americans who having been born during the depression reaped the rewards that FDR Democrats with organized labor were able to win for working class Americans. I was able to go to college because of the GI bill and purchase a home, something that was an impossibility for my parents who struggled to make ends meet. It is sad to think that my grandchildren may never enjoy the hard won benefits that have had the good fortune to inherit.

Born during the Depression, son of 2 immigrants, grew up in poverty, went to college on the GI bill, and was able to buy a house. See my post #52 about HIS dad, a union organizer. (my mom's dad was a union organizer as well. And my dad was head of his faculty union (state university) for a while, and led the faculty out on strike when the admin. was pulling the all-too-typical bullshit over health care benefits. So I've got "feisty" in my genes. :-) )
