Palin will go on the attack
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 10:33 PM by Doug_Orlando
She's a nitwit but can still rally the base. She can't have the crowd chant ‘USA’ or ‘dill baby drill’ like she does at her rallies but she can give simple demagoguery and go on the attack - the far right will eat it up. And she may win some of the “Wal Mart moms” back (what the campaigns call them) if she appears tough. She’s all about appearance anyway – nothing about issues. Her handlers know better than go toe to toe with Joe B.

33. Exactly right, Doug. She'll attack.
Demagoguery OBFUSCATES THE ISSUES and hate and attack is a key part of demagoguery. Whatever she says it will be all about attack. If she didn't know what to attack on, she'd be busy screaming, "Obama had a piece of toilet tissue on HIS shoe and HE didn't even KNOW it!!!!!"

Lipstick! Lipstick! Lipstick! Lipstick! Lipstick!

2. None of that matters.
Wanna know why?

The far right that you mentioned? These debates aren't for them. They aren't for either side's base.

These debates are for the true fence sitters. Those who simply don't have any allegiance to a party and are waiting until now to decide.

I hope she does get all attacky and nasty, because if she does that, she'll erase the only good thing she can get out of this debate: sympathy points.

13. Yep. In all honesty, her ONLY hope is sympathy points.
But if she's nasty or testy in any way, she can kiss that victim card goodbye.

If I were Biden, I'd be HOPING she tries to get all nasty-like. Hee. I want to see that.

34. I'm not sure you're right, Erin. The veep candidate's job is not necessarily to win a popularity
contest but to ROUGH UP the opposing presidential candidate. The veep is supposed to be an attack dog so that the pres. candidate can keep "clean." Even if Palin loses the debate, if her attacks raise doubts about Obama, she wins. If she draws blood it doesn't matter what people think of her. Her task is to "soften up" Obama. The Republican 527s will finish the job later.

5. I think she'll be exactly like she was with Couric today....
....when both she and Biden were questioned. She'll try her best to give straight forward answers. A debate, if you watched last Thursday, is not a popularity contest, it's dry and serious. She will have to show she is qualified and be presidential. Her cutesy antics are totally out of place in that setting.

37. I only agree partially, Rich Girl.
Definitely she will try to win the "likeability" test. But while being witty and vivacious at the GOP convention she was also very nasty in WHAT she said, even if not in the WAY she said it. The McCain camp needs to beat up Obama and she's the one who's supposed to do it. So she will belt Obama, albeit with a smile and a velvet glove. But if you ignore her smiles and winks and flirtation and coy sideways looks, and just read what she said, it will be quite venomous.

30. That's what they want Joe to do, she'll be baiting him
hoping he turns on her. I don't think he'll do it. They don't want to give her any room to be a sympathetic character.

If she attacks and he remains above the fray she'll be not only known as stupid, but ugly too.

38. I don't agree that Palin hurts her ticket by attacking.
Democrats have been losing elections for years on the false comfort that if the other side attacks they are only hurting themselves, blah blah. Just look at Kerry not responding to the Swiftboat attacks. Real nasty. Had to hurt the GOP, right? And then Kerry was bleeding and wounded.

Face it. There are plenty of attacks that draw blood. Obama responded to the "celebrity" charge saying, "That's it? That's all they have?" And guess what. His lead in the polls evaporated while McCain was accusing him of being a celebrity.

Palin will attack and in my opinion it will cover her and her running mate's deficiencies and also draw blood.

40. Politicians have won elections by calling their opponent a "thespian."
It means an actor. Never underestimate the gullible American public's capacity to fall for dumb GOP attacks. Palin will attack and it will draw blood and it will wound Obama and Biden.

10. Badgering Joe Biden will make her look like an idiot
The majority of people who will watch are curiosity seekers. No one expects to hear her say anything intelligent or of substance. She can't do anything but look like a fool who is way out of her league on the national stage, imo. She will not have a teleprompter and if they are allowed to have notes, she will be looking down at them frequently. Most likely losing her place.

50. SNL probably doesn't have time to write a skit based on the debate for this week.
And the writing for the last Tina Fey/Palin skit was, in my view, rather tepid. Fey is overlooking a lot of Palin's mannerisms and inflections and facial expressions. And the writers in my opinion really haven't done their homework about Palin. They don't know a lot about her.
