Barack Meets Spock!
Not that I want to link to the NY Post here, but...

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10012008/gossip/pagesix/we_hear_131455.htm

THAT Leonard Nimoy was at a recent Barack Obama event when the candidate spotted him in the crowd and acknowledged Mr. Spock with the Vulcan hand signal.

Cool! Live long and prosper, B'Rack!

3. Fascinating.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? Or the one?

11. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
Now that you think about it, doesn't Obama's whole platform sound kinda like "Star Trek"?

13. Barack Groks Spock
Had to say it!

Many have commented that if you look (from above) at the stage that was built for his nomination acceptance speech, the layout resembled a starship.

7. I heard that on NPR a few weeks ago,
when Nimoy was a guest on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Nimoy himself said so. The NY Post (NYC's fishwrap) sure gets their "news" late.

9. I liked Tim Russ as Tuvok too. I thought he did a great job!
Funny you mention it... As much as people chide Obama on his verbosity and thought process, with attempts to think through what he will say before he says it, it seems he is very "Vulcan-like". Except when he busts out with that big grin.

14. I'd actually heard a rumor that he was going to be a SD Comic-Con
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 09:40 PM by AnnieBW
Some folks in my Star Trek club (shameless plug: the USS Chesapeake: http://www.usschesapeake.org/) were talking about a speech that he'd made somewhere that talked about growing up with Star Trek, and the "final frontier". Someone mentioned that they'd heard a rumor that Obama was going to go to the San Diego Comic-Con. This was prior to him going to the Middle East and Europe, though.

Wouldn't that be so frakin' cool, to have a Trekkie as President? I know that Hillary was a fan of ST:VOY, because she invited Kate Mulgrew to speak on a panel about women in science.

Another thing that I love about Barack Obama. He's a Trekkie. Or Trekker, if you prefer. We'll just have to find out who his favorite captain is - Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, or Archer? I'm betting on Sisko, just because I'm a shameless DS9 fan.

15. ObamaVulcan T-Shirts!!!

Barack Obama, next president of the United States: American, world citizen, universal citizen. Amid the right-wing rumor-mongering about Obama being a Muslim, some of us have noticed the senator flashing the Vulcan hand gesture greeting on occasion, but so quickly that photos rarely capture it at its full expression. Nonetheless, it seems clear enough for anyone willing to see that he's a Vulcan. We think some level-headed, Vulcan judgment would make a nice change from the last eight years. If you agree it's time for a change, why not start with your shirt?

17. I don't think so...
As much as I love Obama and Star Trek, and wish I could get excited about this story, it can't be true.

We're supposed to believe that Barack Obama gave Leonard Nimoy the Vulcan hand signal in front of a crowd of people, and no one got a photo.

20. Early 2007, per Nimoy ... that makes more sense
The Post article claims this happened "at a recent Barack Obama event."

The story is easier to believe (that this happened, yet no one captured it on film) based on Nimoy's recollection of the time line. Nimoy said it was about a year and a half ago. If it had been recent, as the Post claims, someone would have snapped a pic.
