Looks like McCain is gonna be voting YEA on a Senate Rescue Bill
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 02:56 AM by FrenchieCat
That's gonna piss off his conservative base.

The bill that the Senate is bringing forward to be voted on the night before the Biden-Palin debate has some trimmings on it that McCain's base is not gonna love. extending unemployment insurance benefits, typically a Democratic goal, but one that appeals to some Rust Belt Republicans. Another Democratic-backed idea would double the property tax deduction taken by people who do not itemize their taxes. And another calls for more spending on transportation infrastructure projects, which would create more jobs. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26953481/page/2/

Also included in the bill, Obama's suggestion of increasing the FDIC limit to $250,000 which was well received on a bipartisan basis. Obama suggested it first, but of course, that's not how it is being credited....cause the Press still loves McCain's 3 days old dirty drawers. The press is reporting as both Obama and McCain coming up with the idea at exactly the same time, although Obama's press release gives him documented proof as to who brought it up first, and McCain was forced to give credit to Obama under his breath.

Also some popular Tax cuts in there....but that will be popular by moderates and conservatives, and so that becomes a wash, politically.

But that's OK. It's worth the grief that McCain will get from the conservative base, since it appears that we have to do a "Rescue" plan one way or another.

Since John Country First McCain will not want to be seen as a obstructionist on the "Rescue" plan, because he inserted himself all in the middle of things, when he announced that he would be personally saving the nation singled handedly. Meaning, he can't really vote against it, and he can't really not show up for a vote, after his hissy fit of last week.

Obama and Biden will be voting on it too. And then there will be questions about that bill at the debate, and most likely, Palin will have to have read and understood the bill. But again, the bill is not going to be finalized until Wednesday night.

Look, McCain wanted to be the leader of his party, right? So then, he can vote on a bill first, and then let the chips fall where they may. GOP Mitch McConnell is not doing too well in his reelection bid, so he needs to have this shit be straight-up bipartisan. That's why he's going for it. Sen. Reid put it out there. and If 'O' had anything to do with it, which I'm sure he did, then he is brilliant.

For a sucked up situation that the GOP, especially McCain tried to game politically, it may not end up so well for them politically.

The conservative freepers like Rush Limbaugh will have to eat their shorts....LOL!

22. I've been trying to figure out the strategy of today's vote.
It didn't really make much sense to me until right now.

I think you guys are on it. The Dems had already agreed to hold their noses and pass this bill for a lot of good political (and lousy economic) reasons. But McCain was still bouncing around out there trying to work both sides of the issue for whereever he could get some attention and/or political gain. This vote forces his hand.

And if he has voted for the bill and the House COP still fights it (a very good possibility), it makes it look like he can't even lead his own party.

They really have him boxed in on this one. And the timing of the votes ensures that this will be right in the center of the news as the debate Palin-Biden goes on the air.

It is an expensive victory -- $700,000,000,000. But it is a victory, potentially a crushing one for McCain.

3. Obama and Biden better not cast a vote before the repukes and McLame cast their votes
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 03:11 AM by Heather MC
I hope this bill fails too
IT's a bad bill
I think the Dems would be better off making a Dem friendly bill and leaving the repukes out of it

And if Bush Vetos it Ole well

10. Don't worry, the Senate bill will pass, and McCain will be voting
For it. He really has no choice, IMO.

24. OK, let's say McCain votes "Yea", then what
Let's say the bill passes the Senate with McCain voting in favor. What happens in the House?

If the GOP only musters a marginal number of votes, do we let them get away with that? It seems to me that Pelosi needs to make sure that there are no more Dem votes for it in the House than the first time around. In other words, force the GOP to turn some of their people around. We know that they voted against it because they are afraid of a voter backlash. So make them decide between a local voter backlash versus another humiliation of McCain.

28. Pelosi has got it under control......She's been on the phone with Obama, I'm sure.
And yes, I believe that there will be some scary House republicans who will not vote against Business Tax cuts.....because they are now confused.

The only person that needs to STFU for now is Bush...who just decided to speak on TV a few moments ago.

4. Here's a question... if you don't mind..
You mentioned Limbaugh...and honestly, I despise the man so much it was a real stretch for me to even capitalize his name, much less spell it right. Has he been against this bill, then? What was his take on McCain and his "save the country rescue mission" of last week? How will he spin this do you think?

8. Rush was against the plan, and was happy with the House Repugs who stopped it.
He's been more muted on McCain, since McCain has been muted on his stance on the bill.

17. McCain hasn't been that muted. He said in three interviews yesterday to go forward with this bill.
Actually McCain has the loudest mouth on tv over passing of a bill...whatever bill that is. McCain just doesn't shout specifics because he doesn't get thet specifics.

so he doesn't have to lead with his mouth. Now, he can actually show up and vote.

6. $250K FDIC protection! Woohoo! As a small manufacturer, that means the world to me.
I have 25-30 people who rely on my ability to cut paychecks and vendor checks every week or two... without my bank account I'd be totally screwn. Yay to Obama for pushing this through!

This is great news I agree and I'm sincerely happy for you and your employees. It's you guys we need to sustain in order to maintain the economy. Not the damn corps., mainly because they tend to move around and relocate to other countries. You guys employ us which gives us jobs.

This issue will be a wash, at least in the presidential race. Should never have been politicized to begin with, and we all know who is responsible for that!

14. Correct. Plus Obama gains points, because this mess
is rightly seen as a Republican mess.

So in the end, John McCain will have to deal with his pissed off base.

Meanwhile, Obama is shoring up support and explaining the need for the "Rescue Plan" to those on the left that might have opposed it. He is showing leadership on the issue, just for the mere fact that he is explaining why the plan needs to pass, but also what he will do to keep this from happening again.

This Senate move is a brilliant one.

By the way, Obama got full credit on MSM. They said & McCain reiterated Obama's suggestion was on point.

20. But McCain's well known amongst Republicans for being a backstabber (i.e. maverick)
Will he try to do the same to Obama? He really really hates Obama so he might try his utmost to backstab Obama...

That's the thing I'm worried about.

21. I love how reporters
for the last couple of weeks were saying that McCain was going to vote AGAINST the bailout to prove that he is a maverick...but I guess he's voting for it. But wait...he's still a maverick! A reporter (not commentator) said last night on CNN that McCain voting FOR the bailout shows that he is even MORE of a maverick, because many Republicans don't like the bill! Good grief, does it ever end?
