I just watched several Republican leaders today do something simply amazing: They are all out there declaring that we can't rush into this legislation because it is too complex and gives too much power to the Treasury.
Let that sink in a moment. . .
Large complex legislation...
Rush to sign due to crisis...
Gives too much power to the executive...
. . .
This all sounds so very familiar... ah yes. The Patriot Act. The Patriot Act II. Domestic Spying Laws. etc. etc. etc.
Their words when these bills came up: "We must act now." "Security can't wait." "Democrats who want to read the bill are aiding and abetting the terrorists."
When Democrats really wanted to give these bills the proper consideration and protections for the American citizens. But Republicans ramrodded these Bush/Republican bills down Americas throat. They held Americans hostage against the threat of terrorist attacks.
And now they want to put the breaks on. What's different?
Oh yeah, when it comes to protecting American's civil liberties, the GOP is all about giving power to the executive.
But when it comes to protecting their money, the GOP is all about taking power away from the government. I bet they also realize their party isn't going to be the next executive.
Americans see this for what it is. The proverbial nail in a long dead political party. It just hasn't been hammered all the way in yet.
