Could McCain's new 'Hail Mary' hinge on getting Bristol Palin married?

Palin's Wedding Bells

A surprise may happen in the next few weeks as Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate will be having the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.
John McCain’s campaign has some possible expectation that there will be a popularity boosting coming with a pre-election wedding taking place in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and the father of her baby.
“It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

In a series of heavily criticised interviews with Katie Couric of CBS News, Palin came across as an under-informed student. Palin was stumped when Couric asked her to provide examples of McCain’s proposals for reforming the banking industry. “I’ll try to find some and I’ll bring them to you,” she said eventually.
Republicans are waiting for her biggest test of the election, her televised debate with Joe Biden, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, on Thursday in St Louis, Missouri.

1. It's not gonna happen. A majority of Freepers thought it was the worst idea ever...
...and if THEY are questioning it, it's clearly a terrible, terrible idea.

2. Yeah but you have to realize there is no logic with the McCain camp
remember Jenna Bush got a nice spread in people magazine so he's hoping they can get the same free publicity

Even the most craven, crass politico wouldn't march her daughter onto national TV for a knocked-up, shotgun wedding during a presidential election. It raises all the red flags. All of them.

Besides, who ever heard of throwing a Hail Mary pass when you're getting beat 42-0 in the fourth quarter?

3. Levi looks dumb, but I don't think he's this stupid.
All he's gotta do is wait out November 4. Won't matter if he doesn't marry her after that.

4. They will say that Levi is making an "honest" woman out of Bristol.
Please, no.

8. Why does she need to be made honest?
What about Levi? His sperm were involved.

9. That would be more than a little creepy
and would probably be about as successful as their other stunts have been.

12. Creepy is right.
The tabloids are already adamantly NOT Palin's friend. They may be trash, but they sit right out in grocery checkout where everybody who doesn't live under a wicker basket can see them. I've seen the old ladies snatching up the current mags with Sarah's affair and Cindy's pills. They already consider her a freakshow and I don't think a shotgun wedding's gonna help a bit.

10. Media-distracting, yes. Popularity-boosting, no.
The only thing this premature shotgun wedding would accomplish is getting the media not talking about Obama.

11. "It would shut down the race for a week."
So sorry to disappoint this "McCain insider" who actually believes that America would focus
on this white-trash, shotgun wedding for "an entire week".

Princess Diana's wedding wasn't even the focus for an entire week.

I doubt most Americans will tune to watch Diane Sawyer hosting, "A Baby and Wedding Shower For Bristol"
while Bristol opens her gifts from Ben Franklin and Kmart.
