Me and my family went down to Philly yesterday to do canvassing.

We drove down from NYC to Philly for the day. We were in No. Philly, went door-to-door canvassing, my husband, 6yo daughter and me. It was fantastic. It was a very Democratic area, pro-Obama, very poor and depressed and very inspiring how political people are, they are mostly registered and know when and where they're supposed to vote (that was our purpose, to make sure everyone is the house was registered, knows when and what to bring on election day, and know where their poll is, also to assess how strong their support of Obama is). We went to at least 50 houses, talked to lots of people just hanging out on their stoop (in that way, it's just like Brooklyn) and got some buzz going in the n'hood.

We had a few people say they didn't want to tell us or weren't sure, but according to the ward captain they were just playing games. She said she was gonna make sure everyone came out to vote and vote Democratic. She was amazing!

It had a really big positive impact on my 6yo daughter, and she's at least half the reason we did it. She's a huge Obama supporter and we've done lots of stuff in Brooklyn, but we had a really good conversation on the way down about how the electoral college map works (in 6yo terms, LOL) and why Pennsylvania is so important. I hope she will remember it for her whole life. :loveya:

Gobama!

1. Your daughter will remember
It will at least set her up to be aware of what it takes for a campaign. She will have a sense of involvement and that will driver her.
I have two daughters that I have taken with me on such events. One now in college is trying to find time to get involved. The other in high school is getting involved in a civics organization and very excited about it.

About the canvassing, I was out here in suburban Cleveland, we were working independent voters and I had 2 out of about 120 homes that were McCain. I actually had some good conversations with several and before I left they said they would vote for Obama. Registered one voter as well. (I have had that joy every time I have been out)
