Scenario: Palin drops out for x reason, and is replaced by a MORE competent fundie Republican...
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 12:35 AM by steve2470
Is there any way in hell that strategy can work for McSame ? Or would the mere fact of replacing Palin for any reason doom his campaign ? I'm thinking that "could" happen if enough high ranking Republican contributors put heat on McSame.

on edit: My thinking is that SHE resigns for family reasons or something barely plausible. NOT that McSame replaces her.

1. He really needs to drop her, but he can't at this point.
It would be like amputating an elbow because of massive bleeding in your hand.

Either way, your F'ed.

7. Let this be a lesson. Better vetting pays dividends.

12. I agree. Plus, Obama's pick of Joe Biden completely threw them for a loop
By not picking someone who could be criticized as a "gimmick," McCain was forced to make a "gimmick" pick of his own.

3. he's toast if he replaces her with a month to go
my hope is he does try some more "gambler" moves. They all seem to be paying dividends for Obama.

Bottom line: Their base loves her and she's raising money, so I don't see her going anywhere.

16. The better question is this: How does the RNC invest their money?
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 12:51 AM by OmahaBlueDog
By tomorrow, Tuesday latest, they're going to know how the debate really went when they see the 3-day rollings from Gallup and Ras. By next Monday (or by the next SNL), they're going to know how Thursday went. If the poll spreads don't start moving their way this week, and if we believe the votes are really counted, they will have to make one of 4 decisions with the campaign cash they've collected for the party.

a) Keep rolling the dice on McSame and hope it turns
b) Shift their investment into Senate and Congress races -- some of which (especially in the Senate) they could keepwith a big cash infusion now.
c) Start shifting their ad strategy from McSame to a wedge issue approach (terror, taxes, God/Guns/Gays) to try to drive base turnout across the board
d) Write '08 down, bank the money, and start planning a backlash bi-election a la 1994

My guess is that if the numbers aren't turning by Tuesday, they'll wait and see the debate. If Palin bombs again, I think they'll look hard at option "b".

5. what fundie you gonna get? Pat Robertson? James Dobson? Swaggart?
you'd think any one of them would send a big chunk of semi-normal Republicans fleeing.

11. OK, I'll play. You'd get Newt Gingrich
Yes,he's polarizing, and he's a cold fish, and he has the whole leaving-the-cancer-sricken-wife thing. However, he's never been accused of being a fool, and their base would love him as much as Palin. However, he does nothing for indies and has zero sex appeal.

6. I think it would be like putting a better driver behind the wheel....
of a car, after it had launched off a cliff...Or putting a better pilot at the yoke of an aircraft that had lost its tail and one of its wings.

Is there any way in hell that strategy can work? Nope.

9. She has got to show up for that debateThursday...
I'm having a party just so we can watch that dumbass sink McSame's candidacy even further, plus I am looking for some good laughs (can't afford to visit the comedy club right now).

13. Can you imagine the red button/mushroom clouds commercials
with the words no mulligans and sometimes you don't get a second chance?

Then the link ins with Bush's "ill-advised" decisions.

Finally you get the hits on Maverick just meaning erratic and you've kicked your own ass.

No, he'll just have to sink with his "Country...what Country? Fuck 'em" candiadate, rather than go down as a historical fuck up. He's already in Political Science class lecture territory as is.

Though, he might anyway since he has done everything else that is amazingly silly.

15. Competent fundie??
Do those two words even belong in the same sentence?

I suppose Romney comes close by some definitions, but the fundies don't consider him a fundie because he's got a third testament to read besides the usual two.
