McCain Camp Prays for Palin Wedding
Times of London

The marriage of the vice-presidential candidate’s pregnant teenage daughter could lift a flagging campaign

By Sarah Baxter in Washington

IN an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one — the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.

Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

There is already some urgency to the wedding as Bristol, who is six months pregnant, may not want to walk down the aisle too close to her date of delivery. She turns 18 on October 18, a respectable age for a bride — and the same age as Barack Obama’s pregnant mother when she married his Kenyan father. The Democrat has already declared Bristol’s private life off-limits as far as his campaign is concerned.

30. More disgusting, though,
is that this totally irrelevant event would give McCain/Palin a boost. I mean, WTF!?! Who cares and why should we? What does this have to do with governing the U.S.? I have to shake my head sometimes at the bottomless stupidity of some of my fellow citizens. If stupidity were only a renewable resource.

2. 18 is "respectable" age for a bride?
In my mind, it's merely "legal." Look, I married young too (20), but come on already. Respectable would be if she didn't do it because she got knocked up with her family forcing her into a shotgun wedding.

If they make it a political issue, then Bristol Palin and her groom to be become immediately fair game.

In what fucking country does one think 18 is a legitimate age to get knocked up and shotgun married?

All of this is beside the point that her family should not be in our sights... Palin's lack of intellect is more than enough for us to shoot at.

31. We are talking about the same people who used Trig as a prop to hide Bristol's
own stomach for 3 days (Fri, Sat, Sun) until they were forced to fess up on Monday..only after a few candid shots (one from McCain's kid's blog!)
got a shot of the belly sans Trig blocking the view. Then there was, that same weekend, pics of Bristol's wedding ring finger with a RING on it..more speculations and questions leading to the Monday's announcement.

So pretty much nothing is too low for them to try and pull off.

But having said that, I doubt Palin/McCain want to open up the Bristol/Levi mess all over again (who knows what else damaging info there is out there), so just IMHO, there will be no wedding in front of the news/media anytime soon.

I still think it is weird that Levi's sister was using the phrases "mommy in law" and "sister in law" on her myspace back in April (referring to pics of Palin and Bristol). Her supposed due date is December. Did Bristol even KNOW she was pregnant back in April?? Had she even missed her first cycle?? Things on the surface are NOT adding up. Palin knows that. Best for Mclame that Bristol/Levi stay far, far away.

26. Agreed.
Only the true-believers would lap it up (and only the dimmest among them). The media narrative, if covered extensively, would be "is this just for the election?" (of course it is) and most people will be disgusted by it.

Makes me feel sorry for Bristol. I'm sure the decision to get married certainly wasn't hers.

I feel sorry for her. She is a victim of her mother's ambition and her father's just plain stupidity.

She should opt for a quiet ceremony as soon as possible. Family only, punch and cookies, the pastor and a nice, sweet marriage ceremony. Everybody quiet and being "respectful."

What's wrong with that? I think it would be marvelous. Sarah, do it. Do it for the country and for your eternal reputation, would you? Please do not inflict any more harm on us!

Thank you!

34. What wont Republicans do to win?
Any American who would vote for Palin/McSame because she forced her TEENAGE daughter to marry her baby daddy, is not someone whose intelligence I respect. I think 18 is too young to get married, It was too young when Barack Obama's mom did it and it's too young to do it now, ESPECIALLY NOW. Kids today are infantalized far more than were kids of Barack's mom's age. Today kids remain adolescents until at least their mid 20s, and it's accepted as normal in middle and upper middle class families.

I would hope even the most dim witted American would see that in 2008 getting married ONLY because you are pregnant is not a good reason to get married.

If Bristol Palin was a poor white, black or latino the amount of judgment and derision heaped upon her would fill volumes.

WHO on DU thinks 18 is a good age to get married? Wow!

My guess is, such an event wouldn't shut the race down for a week, maybe for a day, but it says something about the mccain camp that they'd want to shut the race down for as long as possible. But do they really think people would not look and say, "well that's nice, better late than never, but it doesn't make mccain or palin a better choice." Wouldn't win new votes, would be seen as a stunt by anyone thinking. Of course, they count on the non-thinking and the apathetic and ambivalent. Won't work for them this year.
