To the baby boomers whose kids are voting for Obama this Fall: Thank you!
Like Bill Clinton said on Larry King Live...

"If you go into a race where you're going to get 45 percent of the vote, then those races are going to look close until the end. But what I think -- and what I've always thought would happen here is that because of the condition of the economy, because of the demographics of America growing more diverse, younger, more open to the diversity of the Democratic Party, and because Senator Obama is, I think, not only charismatic, but really smart and a very disciplined candidate who has handled himself, I think, by and large, really remarkably well. I've always thought that in the end he would come out ahead."

Especially after last night, it's starting to feel like the pattern of the past two presidential elections is about to die.

32. That is what they always say, that the younger ones started it.
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 07:05 PM by rebel with a cause
But here in Illinois in 2004 it was an even split between the older people and the younger ones. It was shocking that the most ardent supporters were my age or older (in 2004, 58+) or teenage/college kids. There were those inbetween also, but the largest groups in the southern part of the state were divided between the young and the old.

Edited to add: I am two weeks older than a baby boomer can be, but I will include myself in this. My two adult children and I have been Obama supporters since early 2004, and we will proudly be voting for him this November.

sons ( 28, 28, 25) are solid Obama. Too bad two are in New York and one is in San Francisco. The first one to go for Obama in the family was our 15 year old ( who is livid that he can't vote because he is better informed than his older brothers).

Incidentally, regarding polls, our three older sons only have cells, as do most of their friends.

...and the other voted for the first time during our primary by absentee ~ but I know he voted because he called to ask which Obama delegates I knew. Good kids!

Though they grew up with an activist mom (environmental and political), both had reservations about getting involved themselves ~ feeling fed up by the stealing of elections, etc. What seemed to make the difference was when I explained that we'd been trying to reach CRITICAL MASS for decades, and they were the ones who could get us there (their generation). It's true, and I'm soooo hopeful now!!! :)

70. Raised two solid Obama supporters here
One of them was even an Obama delegate from his precinct to the county caucus in Washington State last spring.

They tell me that at the message boards where they hang out online, there are still a few libertarians and Ron Paul supporters but no McCain supporters at all -- or at least none that are willing to admit to it in public. This is in contrast to just a few years ago, when the Bush supporters formed a small but very noisy minority.

I think that among the 20-somethings in general, there has been an amazing withering of support for the Republican Party. The GOP, which was way ahead of the Dems in adopting computerized mailing lists and such in the 70's and 80's, has fallen far behind when it comes to the Internet. McCain is not an anomaly in today's GOP -- he's the perfect symbol of how out-of-touch, uncool, and generally geriatric it's become.
