i was talking to a friend about how people said mccain was using code words in the debate last nite. however, my friend didn't believe that there WERE any "code words", and that this idea was just bunk. shoot, *ush used them when speaking to the RWers. can anyone point me anywhere so that i can show her what we're talking about here?

I watched the full debate and didn't hear any 'code words'.

15. Not so much a conspiracy as not present IMO.
When we talked about Bush using 'code words' in debates he did indeed use specific language aimed at the extreme religious right that was meant not to be very noticeable to those not in that group. I don't think that happened last night. I haven't heard any examples.
I don't think in the Bush case it was a conspiracy theory.

16. I agree...
When I meant about conspiracy theory is when something like that is not present, yet someone comes up with a tortured theory about how it really was present in McCain.

4. Can't point you to a link, but I'm studying this idea.
A heuristic is a mental shortcut we take, so that we don't have to really think things through. Like P*= 'one of us" without really learning about her.

6. Shrub's code words were for fundies.
McCain isn't very close to the fundies, I imagine he's leaving the fundie code words to Caribou Barbie.

17. actually
the people who mentioned code words were referring to mcain's use of code words like "he just doesn't understand", implying that he was speaking to the racists in the audience. supposedly, that's code for "uppity n*****".

10. I heard a lot of code words that were meant to suggest that Obama is too young and inexperienced
to be President - "he doesn't understand the difference between strategy and tactics"

Plus - why did McCain keep referring to Obama in the 3rd person as if he wasn't on the same stage as himself and Leher?

11. My opinion...
I dont think 'he doesn't understand' was code. It was simply McCain making his incorrect assertion that Obama didn't understand because he was inexperienced. It was a cheap debate tactic rather than explaining what he doesnt understand.

As far as the body language. My guess is that his handler told him not to look at Obama in order to keep from blowing a gasket. I think McCain was pissed and was trying to stay calm and not blow up. He could only do that by not looking at Obama. To me it showed great disrespect/cowardice/dismissal and I think others feel similarly.

12. "Don't know enough about him" - racism code?
I was talking to my sister this morning, and she was talking about all the poll results of people saying that they don't think they know enough about Obama. I mused on that for a moment, and then she said that she thought that was some sort of code for "I'm not comfortable about voting for a black man yet".

I don't know what I think about that yet, but I'm thinking about it.

20. But such code would only be needed for the blind.
Wouldn't it?

Might be alluding the the Muslim rumors. Or more likely to things like Ayers, his Columbia years, time in Indonesia, etc., etc.

Or even to the RW claims that the MSM hasn't really done enough investigative reporting wrt Obama.
