McCain Losing Ground With Older Voters: Campaign Notebook

By Bob Drummond and Joe Sobczyk

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- John McCain is losing ground with older Americans, a group that consistently has high turnout at the voting booth.

Barack Obama jumped to a 46-42 percent lead among those 65 and older in the latest Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll. That's an 18 percentage-point swing since mid-August, when the poll showed McCain with a 50-36 percent advantage.

People 65 and older are among Americans most concerned about financial upheaval, according to the poll, taken Sept 19-22. Only 11 percent say they're better off than they were four years ago, compared with 24 percent of all respondents; 8 percent of the older Americans say the country is moving in the right direction, compared with 13 percent overall.

Obama also has the advantage with younger voters. The Illinois senator leads 52-41 percent among Americans between 18 and 44 years old. Those in the middle, ages 45-64, are going for McCain 47 percent to 42 percent.

While McCain gets a majority of Protestants, 51 percent to 41 percent, Obama wins Catholics 47 percent to 35 percent for McCain.

2. I bet a lot of those Florida seniors are pretty well off.
They have a $ to lose if the market crashes.

4. They are already trying to disenfranchise voters
in Florida. The GOP must be very worried seeing all these Obama stickers.

15. What happened with the seniors,
is something like the debate.

ARRP's 50th Anniversary appearances by the 2 candidates was a start contrast. I think word has gotten around.

Barack's appearance

vs.

McCain's appearance
Strange! I couldn't find it. It was bad though. Take my word for it.
Which is why he is sinking like a stone. Nothing like word of mouth in
the Senior community!

Poll: Obama leads among US Jews

Barack Obama leads John McCain by 27 points among Jewish voters, according to a new survey.

Obama leads 57 percent to 30% among those polled in the American Jewish Committee's 2008 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion, with 13% undecided, but he significantly trails the Jewish vote for recent Democratic presidential candidates.

By contrast, John Kerry received 76% of the Jewish vote four years ago against George W. Bush, and in the three prior presidential elections, Democrats won 78% to 80% of Jewish votes. The 2004 AJC survey, taken three weeks earlier in that campaign than this year, found Kerry leading 69% to 24%.

The poll by survey research organization Synovate of 914 self-identifying Jewish respondents, selected from Synovate's consumer mail panel, was conducted by telephone September 8-21. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

McCain enjoyed a 78% to 13% lead among Orthodox Jews, but Obama won easily among all other Jewish groups: Conservatives, 59% to 26%; Reform, 62% to 27%; and those calling themselves "just Jewish," 61% to 26%.

McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate was unpopular in the Jewish community, according to the survey. Just 37% approved, with 54% disapproving of the selection. By contrast, Obama's choice of Joe Biden garnered 73% approval and 15% disapproval.

9. Does that mean the anti-senior posts here will stop
just as the anti-women posts eventually stopped?

People who look at statistics without any comprehension of them, and who run off to post "(demographic du jour) are stupid" posts, are, well, pointing the stupid label in the wrong direction.

10. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the elderly vote will be
the one that puts Obama in the White House. We know our limitations and know that McCain isn't up to the job.

12. Both my conservative, Bush-loving grandparents...
are going for Obama here in Oklahoma of all places. If my grandfather, who told my mom if she brought home a black man he'd disown her, is *enthusiastic* about voting for Obama, then I believe Obama will win this thing.

13. Let me see, 401K and social security and pensions???
I am newly semi retired the last 3 years and my 401K has lost alot, thankfully our other retirement is not based on that but I am still thinking about it. My husband is older than me and only wants to work part time for a few more years.

So us older folks are thinking, yes we have alot on our minds and giving money to the rich isn't one of them!

20. Glad to hear it didn't affect your retirement
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 10:11 PM by nam78_two
In general, I feel bad for anyone (even the misguided Repubs) who is going to see their retirement take a hit. It always breaks my heart to see someone over 60 working at a grocery store or something, just to have to make ends meet :(. Have been seeing a lot more of that in these Bush years.

17. I told my wife this morning that the real reason that Obama
will win is because he's absolutely right on the why should we give a 300 billion dollar tax cut to people who don't need it and who didn't ask for it.

Makes no sense whatsoever.

And then to make matters worse, McCain is yelling about "cutting spending". I mean just think of the gall of that. You help spend up all the money, and then you come in as champion talking about cutting spending as a way out!

Obama will win because it really makes no sense to keep tilting the game to the rich.

the future for their children's children ad infinitum, too.
