29.5 Million Watch Debate on "BIG 3" / Most on ABC...
Most people saw the debate on ABC last night. 29.5 million saw the debate on the major broadcast stations.

The Cable News Numbers are not out yet and will add to the network sum of total viewers. Remember CNN has beat the "big 3" networks before when it comes to major Political events.

Here's a brief synopsis...

(snip)

Viewed by an average broadcast audience of 29.53 million, the first Presidential Debate dominated the night’s television. (Cable viewership will likely come soon via news story or press release). It is interesting to note that quite a few more viewers watched the debate on ABC than on CBS, NBC or Fox boosting ABC to the win for the night for both average viewers and the adults 18-49 demo.

3. Good Point!!

Last night was the first time I think I was glad MSNBC's coverage will likely finish last in total viewership.

I watched MSNBC last night. And then I watched FOX's coverage this morning. It's scary... but there actually was VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE!

I wish I had "rolled a DVR" on ABC, especially considering it looks like they will "win the night!"

7. I'll go out on a limb and say the cable numbers won't bump it up to the exepected 100 million

Having the debate on Friday was JUST PLAIN DUMB. In my neck of the woods, folks are out at high school football games or out to dinner and a movie with their significant other. It was just a bad idea. Friday is typically a news dump day anyway.

8. I agree.
I don't think it will hit that 100,000,000 mark with cable. I don't know if the PBS numbers were in there though but it doesn't look like PBS + CNN, MSNBC, CSPAN2, & Faux Snooze will take it much higher than maybe the 60,000,000 mark.

10. Further breakdown of the network numbers

NBC usually is the most watched broadcast network for political events. But last night ABC won the evening. I don't know why. According to early numbers, even the ABC post debate analysis had more viewers than the actual debate viewership at NBC or CBS.

I'm told that's good news for us, because the ABC post debate analysis was very favorable to Obama.

Debate numbers
ABC Presidential Debate (9-10:30p) 10.20 million
NBC Presidential Debate (9-10:30p) 7.75 million
CBS Presidential Debate (9-10:30p) 7.44 million
FOX Presidential Debate (9-10p) 4.14 million

Post debate numbers
ABC Presidential Debate Analysis 8.74 million
NBC Presidential Debate Analysis 6.63 million
CBS Presidential Debate Analysis 6.41 million
