is the same thing that the viewing audience doesn't seem to understand.

such a discrepancy, to wit, nutrition.

The whole argument would go something like this:

South and North Koreans are biologically the same: a border does not alter basic biology of population groups. But what we've seen in the last 50 yars is a massive shift, that has resulted in S. Koreans being 3 inches taller than N Koreans. How could that have happened? It could only have happened one way: through radically different nutritional resources. In other words, the North Korean government's management of the state is so bad that it has resulted in a severe biological disparity in the space of 50 or so years.

Here's what you're taught in Debate 101: your warrants and unspoken connections should be shared by the audience. If thy are not, you have to state them. This was a major debate flub primarily because nobody could work out the chain of propositions that would make that statement relevant.

Even so, it's a debatable point.

Japanese people were 3 to 4 inches shorter than us during WWII, but in the years since they have adopted many of our dietary habits, most prominently dairy consumption. They've become taller as a result, but their cancer rates are also higher now. Somewhat undernourished people seem to be healthier and do better in old age.

There are cases to be made on the other side, but it's just not a subject that lends itself well to a 2 minute response in a Presidential debate. There are better quality of life issues he could have used.

There is more than one explanation for the discrepancy, and the conservative ideologues who push this line always fail to explain the seemingly mysterious growth rate of the Westernized Japanese. And yes, I agree, it's a silly line in a debate precisely because the underlying arguments are rather complicated after all.
