Was Mcsame bucking his handlers?
There is no way in hell his prep team would have allowed him to ignore Obama.
His non-tactic was rude, childish, and the body language of someone who senses utter defeat.
Maybe, in his own mind, he thought of himself as quite a "maveric".
I would have liked to heard the conversations of his staff as the debate unfolded.

1. I think he just wasn't adaptable.
He didn't grasp the moderator's desire to have both men speaking to directly to each other. Obama did, and changed his game accordingly. (It's a perfect metaphor for how McCain can't change his thinking on Iraq.)

I also think he was focused on appearing as if he was looking directly at the American people rather than at Obama. But he doesn't know how to play to the camera well enough to pull that off.
