The next time McCain ridicules Obama for having the most liberal voting record in the Senate
I want to see Barack tell that old bastard that he is PROUD of his liberal voting record and proud to be a Liberal.

Then he should look McCain in the eye and ask him why he's ashamed of being a conservative, ask him why true conservatives don't like him, ask him why he always has to brag about being a maverick who disagrees with his own administration, ask him why he had to pick a staunch conservative, an unqualified one, to make up for his lack of conservative appeal on the ticket.

We really have to start being more proud of the word "liberal" and FLAUNT it, not run away from it.

2. No, definitely run away from it
The battle over the word liberal is over, and the liberals lost. This should have been fought 30 years ago.
But I do agree with the sentiment about conservatism. Ask McCain why he is ashamed to be a conservative. Why does he brag about being a maverick who disagrees with the conservative GW Bush (even though he actually votes with him 95% of the time).

3. I disagree. It's time to stand up for what we stand for.
You never hear too many conservatives shying away from the word "conservative". It's time we stood our ground, too. If we run away from the perception that we're running as liberals, then why bother even running?

7. We have lost the word, "liberal"
That's why "progressive" has enjoyed a resurgence. "Liberal" now means "Hippie Commie traitor", however unjustly, and will continue to do so until no one remembers the 1960s.

5. Run away! Run away! LOL. I agree with mtnsnake.
And for what it's worth, neocons never accept defeat, even when they've been obliterated. They even bring back issues that were supposedly settled centuries ago (Magna Carta anyone?)

Why do you so readily accept it?

11. The word 'liberal' is historical. It stands for intellectual freedom.
And it stands for freedom from the bondage of cultural traditions that are oppressive. It stands for the freedom to choose what is right, good, and correct based on conditions and circumstances and to not be tied down to traditions that end up causing harm. It also means being able to choose traditional values based on their deeper reasons and the spirit of the tradition and not follow along just because "that's the way it is".

So I will not run away from being a liberal. Those supposed "conservatives" who denigrate the word only expose their ignorance when they do so.

15. according to whom, Faux Moos??

"No, definitely run away from it

nonsense. say it loud, liberal/leftist and proud.

it's the Dems' fault that *some of them* ALLOWED the word "liberal" to become a dirty word.

we should not be afraid of our own shadows and allow the wingnuts frame our very perception.

the Democratic party desperately needs to move to the left and to redefine itself.

***liberal is beautifil.***

4. I'd answer back, "At least I vote."
McCain has the worst attendance record in Congress, doesn't he? He skips every vote he can, even the important ones.q

9. The line that Obama took last night saying that his voting record
looks liberal because he voted against the Chimp so much is a winner. It's nothing to run away from.

10. It would be nice, but I thought his response was better.
If he could add some specifics to this, like "I'm only considered the most liberal because I voted against Bush's reckless, unAmerican policies, like approving torture of prisoners--an issue I noticed you flip-flopped on, John."

12. And Obama is not a liberal.
Given Democratic control of the government, and sufficient avalanches of mail from us, he might grow into one, but Congress is a profoundly conservative club.

16. Unfortunately, Obama is hardly a liberal. Republicans love to use that label on EVERY opponent
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 06:56 PM by LaPera
whether it fits or not....just attack the character of your opponent anyway you can...republican campaign style, never let the voters know the facts, use smokescreens, diversions, lie, cheat, smear, distort, use anything but stay away from the issue and the facts....

Republicans will always lose when the voters know the FACTS. And republicans know very well this fact!
