So, when was the last time you used the word "festooned"? My cereal was festooned with raisins this
morning.

My wife and I laughed when McBush dusted off that old nugget last night!

Gotta go - my lawn is festooned with dog poops = got to go fling them over the fence!

I swore the first thing I thought of was Montomery Burns from "The Simpsons" when I heard that. :-)

Oval Office with specimens of my most recent hunt into the recesses of the Dark Continent..." not an actual quote--but you get it....

Burns: Some men hunt for sport,
Others hunt for food,
The only thing I'm hunting for,
Is an outfit that looks good...

See my vest, see my vest,
Made from real gorilla chest,
Feel this sweater, there's no better,
Than authentic Irish setter.

See this hat, 'twas my cat,
My evening wear - vampire bat,
These white slippers are albino
African endangered rhino.

Grizzly bear underwear,
Turtles' necks, I've got my share,
Beret of poodle, on my noodle
It shall rest,

Try my red robin suit,
It comes one breast or two,
See my vest, see my vest,
See my vest.

Like my loafers? Former gophers -
It was that or skin my chauffeurs,
But a greyhound fur tuxedo
Would be best,

So let's prepare these dogs,

Mrs. Potts: Kill two for matching clogs,

Burns: See my vest, see my vest,
Oh please, won't you see my vest

6. Could dubloons be festooned with gold? Could
McSame be festooned with tired old talking points he's used all year? Or with an inability to look a candidate in the eye? I don't think 'festoon' fits there. Cowardice might.

7. Festooned...
Say that one a couple of times and it doesn't sound like it's even a real word.

My lawn is festooned with fallen leaves...not the same as dog poops but I should fling those over the fence too! Thanks for the idea!

didn't think much of it last night but now that you mention it, what a quaint turn-of-the-century term for an archaic candidate.

15. Weird - it's in common use in news reports
http://news.google.co.uk/news?oe=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wn&ned=uk&nolr=1&q=festooned+-mccain&btnG=Search

Maybe Americans aren't so keen on it as other English speakers. But there are many US uses in those results too.

words that is sometimes used in writing for descriptive purposes and to go for a particular tone. I can't recall ever hearing anyone actually use it in speech in any but a parodistic way. For some reason, the word seems to have become associated with a kind of 1890s, gilded age sensibility. Imagine, if you will, Gordon Brown turning to Cameron and saying "Damn me, sir, but that proposal is. . . " It would be as if Squire Western suddenly showed up.

In all fairness, Joe Biden's use of the world "malarkey" has its own set of weird qualities. The difference it that when Biden says "malarkey" it is code for "bullshit" which he wants to say and can't.

24. We'd use it in Britain in conversation
a typical use would be in connection with Christmas lights, as McCain's metaphor was, but for things where you think decoration may have gone a bit too far, people wouldn't bat an eyelid at it.

22. I think it has to do with economy.
McCain was so busy fixing things that he couldn't participate in "Talk like a Pirate Day" last week. So he was just trying to catch up. In fact, I hear from now on McCain is going to talk like a pirate in all the debates.

23. Oh, this AM when I thanked my wee Scottie for...
...festooning the LR with the Kapok stuffing from her new stuffed lamb toy she destroyed during the night!

It is just such a festive word to use when awakening to a snow storm of stuffing all over one's dark colored upholstered furniture at 6:00 AM when the same Scottie is asking to be let out and for her morning treats!

:hi:...like I said, she owns me!
