McCain personified barely controlled rage...he was SCARY!
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 08:24 AM by glarius
I'm listening to the "pundits" on MSNBC analysing the debate. They did comment on McCain not looking at Obama, but mostly they think McCain won the debate or that it was a draw. (One of the pundits was Jonathan Alter, whom I thought would have a different slant). And of course, they ALL went on again about how Obama is aloof, and unable to make a conection with ordinary people.
This seems to be the tactic again, in this election as it was in the previous ones with Kerry and Gore. They keep labeling the Democrat as wooden, or humourless or unfriendly.
What I saw last night, was John McCain, for one and 1/2 hours, seeming to be seething with anger, his eyes wild and scary. This was NOT the picture of a president, IMO.
P.S...I see in Obama, an intelligent, likeable, friendly person.

1. He was channeling an angry GW Bush at times.
You could definitely see Rove's fingerprints in McBush's answers.

2. There was a spot near the end where McCain was seething
When he loses his temper, he gets this really scary smile, he quits blinking and he rambles and just lets someone have it. I don't know if the punditocracy noted it. I believe it was in response to Obama's comment on Korea. My first thought was 'glad he doesn't have that nuke football right now. He'd blow Korea away just to prove he has balls."
Too bad more people didn't pick up on his anger there.

4. I can't picture him in conference with world leaders where they
don't agree with what he is saying. He seems to have absolutely NO skills at diplomacy whatsoever.

6. Yes, I really thought he was going to blow up towards the end,
you could see his jaws clenched and his body seemed to get all twisted. I'm hoping that most viewers saw this and realized it was rage. He is a very scary person.

Obama, on the other hand, had very good body language throughout - no facial contortions, good posture, good eye contact even when McCain was attacking. The signs of strength, IMO.

7. I saw Alter, I thought that he disagreed with the op ed read that McCain won...
He said that it wasn't a knock out for either, but that Obama passed the threshold and McCain came off as angry. He said that someone could argue McCain won it on points, but Obama came out better in the end, and most of the polling afterward is showing it (he did say that he agreed with McCain too much, but that it was important more him not to come off as too aggressive, if this was some viewer's first intro to him).

8. Do you guys think Mccain's visible disgust and condescension was calculated? I cant tell
Mccain came off as literally disgusted at Obama.

This came to a head with his emotional "he's dangerous" comments, and the really nasty sneers and such in the last half. That's not even mentioning the overall body language and refusal to look at Obama.
