They've gotten burned from publishing tommyrot in the past - most notably in the case of Carol Burnett, who sued them successfully for fabricating nonsense about her being an alcoholic.

When names are named - as in the Edwards case and now the Palin case - they've got to have their ducks in a row to avoid libel suits. There's got to be enough substance to prove they didn't know some aspect of the story was false if things fall apart.
