"Who won the debate polls" are notoriously subjective, of course, so take them for what they're worth. But according to three post debate polls, respondents think Obama got the best of things tonight:

CBS News: Obama won 39%, McCain won 25%, Draw 36%

Insider Advantage: Obama won 42%, McCain won 41%, Undecided: 17%

CNN: Obama "did better" 51%, McCain "did better" 38%

2. All Obama really had to do was not make any major mistakes and...
...not look like he was attacking a crippled, dim-witted old man.

He's got this. I trust him.

4. These numbers are great! .If Obama just comes out even, he wins.
I think many saw McCain as too nasty and grumpy. Plus Obama looked and sounded more presidential.

5. I always hold my breath to see how the public reacts - that's always hard to predict

I remember in 1980 feeling euphoric at how Jimmy Carter seemed to just trounce Ronald Reagan in the one and only debate. But although President Carter obviously intellectually trounced the less than intellectually deft Reagan, much if not most of the public remembered only one or two little silly little one liners from Reagan and thus thought Reagan had won the debate.

7. Some additional internals of the CNN poll from a DailyKos diary:
CNN just released some internals from their poll which showed that Obama won the debate. 48% of voters 50 and older thought Obama won, but only 40% thought McCain won. This, of course, is McCain's base. Men gave McCain a margin of only 3%, and women gave Obama a margin of about 20%.

10. One of the problems with polls is always how and what was
asked and most polls have no way of taking into account the pollees expectations.

For instance had you asked me if McSame won I would have said no way he was dishonest and irrelevant with most of his answers. If however, you ask me how did McSame do in the debate, I would say much better than expected. Why? Because my expectation was for McSame to foam at the mouth, forget his lines and in general make an ass of his-self and he almost did, but not up to my expectation. On the other hand I expected Obama to have the facts at his command and look and act Presidential, he did. So In the end Obama performed as expected and Mcsame in a terrible effort did better than expected.....go figure.
