What was your favorite line in the debate? Mine was "John, I have a bracelet, too.."
When McCain launched into one of what he considers to be a "Hallmark moment" solilquy about wearing the bracelet bearing the name of a soldier killed in Iraq--how the soldier's mother asked McCain to win so that her son did not die in vain, etc., etc.,I thought I was going to barf.

BUT, when Obama responded, "John, I wear a bracelet, too....." I think I heard angels singing, ballons popping, and I know hubby and I certainly whooped.

What was YOUR favorite line? Or, did you have several?

The student union building where I was watching the debate broke out in laughter and hi-fives when Obama responded. I don't know why more aren't talking about it, such good timing and luck he was wearing that particular bracelet.

Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 11:12 PM by nyc 4 Biden
I always see him wearing that, and I think that caught him by surprise as shown by the fact that he initially blanked on the soldier's name.

I actually love that fact.

IMO it shows that although I see him wearing the bracelet he does not exploit it by talking about it all the time. If he did the soldier's name would have rolled of his tongue as fast as those horrid overused jokes and lies roll of McCain's i.e. "was it a paternal issue or criminal."

EDIT: for spelling

What's cool about being a conservative? You're a closed-minded prude who thinks pretty much anything fun is sinful, including sex (unless it's with a young boy), you're pretty much required to hate at least three groups of people (usually gays, Muslims, and liberals), you think loving your country requires lockstep obedience and borderline worship of someone whom 99.999999% of the world hates, and pretty much your entire life revolves around condemning, hating, and/or trying to control other people.

39. That's got my vote too - biting and really highlights the difference between them
McCain in particular, and Republicans in general, hack their way through everything without much thought or nuance. They would chop off a leg because of an ingrown toenail.

Democrats just overall are more nuanced, careful and considerate. Obama is exceptional in articulating that difference. That hacking our way through everything is what got us here.

debate - he's got to have some "new" stuff that won't sound stale. AND, he can't give away ALL his lines - the repukes are already scouring these tapes and have a response ready for every issue that Obama raised last night, IMO. Fortunately for Obama, his team won't have too much to do since most of McCain's was rhetoric, imo.

One of the body language experts this morning mentioned the bracelet moment and
said that it seems to be the trigger that set off McLame's aggressiveness and
nastiness. He started off at the beginning by seeming like a warm and caring person by mentioning Ted Kennedy, but he ended up showing himself as a very cold and condescending person. I think he is very egocentric and loves the media
attention he was getting as a phony maverick all these years. He cannot stand
being upstaged and this brought out the meanness in him, which is revealing of the "real McLame".

35. I only heard about 5 minutes.
In the car.

The highlights of those 5 minutes:

OBAMA: "John, you like to pretend like the war started in 2007. You talk about the surge. The war started in 2003, and at the time when the war started, you said it was going to be quick and easy. You said we knew where the weapons of mass destruction were. You were wrong.

You said that we were going to be greeted as liberators. You were wrong. You said that there was no history of violence between Shiite and Sunni. And you were wrong. And so my question is...of judgment, of whether or not -- of whether or not -- if the question is who is best-equipped as the next president to make good decisions about how we use our military, how we make sure that we are prepared and ready for the next conflict, then I think we can take a look at our judgment."

MCCAIN: "I'm afraid Senator Obama doesn't understand the difference between a tactic and a strategy." :eyes:

47. That's not surprising, I just made it up.
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 10:11 AM by Uncle Joe
But it's not death balloon, it's a "meaning of death balloon".

This is where a politician cynically uses the emotional trauma of a grieved family to stay in a war under the premise that if you lose the war, the death of the military service person some how becomes meaningless. The politician may be hoping to rise above, hence the balloon, criticism, redirection or termination of a war, I believe on a political level this reasoning is immoral.

For one thing the political leader should be first and foremost concerned as to the logic, of waging a just war and only as a last resort, not a war based on the emotional equivalent of, for lack of a better phrase "in for a penny in for a pound". Just as a gambler becomes addicted to winning back their losses, a war waged on this premise has no end because losing or winning a war has nothing to do with giving a death meaning.

It was the life that gave meaning, it was taking an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies be they foreign or domestic that gave meaning, it was putting one's life at risk in defense of the nation that gave meaning.

I believe politicians taking advantage of a grieved family's emotional loss for this reason are in fact trying to give the war meaning, whether it deserves it or not. That's what I thought McCain was doing, he was trying to transfer the honorable meaning of the fallen to the war itself and I believe he was doing it for political gain, but even if he wasn't doing it for political gain, it was wrong.

81. Or, as Wilfred Owen put it
Smile, Smile, Smile
Wilfred owen

Head to limp head, the sunk-eyed wounded scanned
Yesterday's Mail; the casualties (typed small)
And (large) Vast Booty from our Latest Haul.
Also, they read of Cheap Homes, not yet planned,
'For', said the paper, 'when this war is done (5)
The men's first instincts will be making homes.
Meanwhile their foremost need is aerodromes,
It being certain war has but begun.
Peace would do wrong to our undying dead, –
The sons we offered might regret they died (10)
If we got nothing lasting in their stead.
We must be solidly indemnified.
Though all be worthy Victory which all bought,
We rulers sitting in this ancient spot
Would wrong our very selves if we forgot (15)
The greatest glory will be theirs who fought,
Who kept this nation in integrity.'
Nation? – The half-limbed readers did not chafe
But smiled at one another curiously
Like secret men who know their secret safe. (20)
(This is the thing they know and never speak,
That England one by one had fled to France,
Not many elsewhere now, save under France.)
Pictures of these broad smiles appear each week,
And people in whose voice real feeling rings (25)
Say: How they smile! They're happy now, poor things.

91. That is one beautiful, profound and tragic poem.
Though, I'm not familiar him, when did he write it, is that World War 1 era or some other war?

Thanks for the poem, alcibiades_mystery.

94. "My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity."
Thank you for introducing me to Wilfred Owen. Had never thought to investigate war poets - have "Letters Home from Vietnam" (I think that is the title!) and other soldiers' letters, but had never thought to look for poets. Thanks!

44. My favorite line was when McCain said he looked into Putin's eyes and saw 3 letters
K.G.B. For some reason that totally cracked me up, seemed really childish & paranoid.

51. 3 letters, 2 eyes - wonder which letters were in which eyes...Or did Putin have a 3rd eye?
Was John not medicated that day?

45. My favorite was the reference to McCain's horrible health care plan.
It was the best line of the night. Devastating for McCain. He didn't know how to respond.

52. OMG, what a firestorm on YouTube. Been there, 5* it, and added to favorites. Sounded like "That's
horseshit" followed by just plain, ol' "horseshit" - and you ought to read what some of the idiots are posting on YouTube. Saying that McInsane was saying "of course, of course." Of course, my ass! He was disagreeing w/Obama, not agreeing! AND, the old geezer was muttering under his breath, HE THOUGHT, imo.

Thanks for Go Heels! :)

59. an unsung moment at the debate
I'm new at DU and don't yet have enough posts to start a
thread. So I hope someone picks this up from daily kos and can
do it for me. It's great! Here's the link and below is the
actual story.

an unsung moment of the debate
by greenrose2
Sat Sep 27, 2008 at 09:06:11 AM PDT

I am writing to share what was for me, the most quietly
inspiring moment of the the debate last night, and why, along
with the obvious policy positions, why Senator Obama is my
candidate. There were plenty of points, very important
points made and scored by Senator Obama. All the blogs have
them, and they were significant and clear positions
articulated by Senator Obama, detailing why he is the
candidate to lead us forward.

But the moment that made me feel like this man is more than a
politician, more than a candidate, came right in the middle of
this debate when Senator McCain was struggling to say the
name Ahmadinejad.

After waiting for what has felt like an eternity for this
debate to occur, I watched every second on the edge of my
seat, on an emotional roller coaster. I was sitting there
cheering for points scored (I'm a sports addict, it's just how
I approach situations like this, it is after all a
competition). And there were plenty of points, very
important points made and scored by Senator Obama. All the
blogs have them, and they were wonderful. After the debate's
conclusion, I checked some blogs and some talking heads.

And then I watched the replay of the debate to digest the
whole thing. To think rather than emote my way through the
responses. And it was in watching the replay that I picked up
my absolute favorite unsung moment of the debate.

It came when Senator McCain was stumbling with Ahmadinejad's
name. He was stumbling hard, almost unable to get the name or
any semblance of it pronounced. Very quietly, but audibly
Senator Obama can be heard saying something. In the first
viewing, I knew he had said something there, but was unable to
decipher exactly what he had said. In listening to the
replay it's easy to hear his comment.

He quietly acknowledged to Senator McCain "That's a tough
one." When I heard his remark, his gracious nod to the
Senator's struggle to pronounce a very difficult name, his
compassion for the man, I choked up. It humbled me. It made
me briefly look inward, and feel lesser for originally maybe
hoping that it was some cutting barb. And it showed him as a
man greater than politics, greater for inspiring empathy and
compassion for a fellow man.

Senator McCain's demeaning, belittling style in the debate
has drawn criticism. Rightly so in my opinion. Some has
been said of Senator Obama's gracious and respectful style,
some even criticizing his style for not being more vicious,
more attacking. But to me, the real measure of the man, not
his "style", but who he is, came in that comment.

It was a very quiet statement. But what it said about Barack
Obama is loud and clear.

This man is not only a great leader, he is a very good man.

doddering angry old men yelling "I HAVE A PEN! I'M THE SHERIFF!" and it cracks us up every time.

I loved it when Obama got into a rythym with the war stuff and he would said John you supported blahblahblah and you were wrong. You supported bleebleeblee and YOU WERE WRONG. You supported xyz and YOU WERE WRONG. It was AWESOME.

76. LOVED the bracelet line. I have to admit that I wasn't expecting that. :p
I mean, McSame has used that line at LEAST a million times by now, so I was expecting to sit through yet another vomit inducing reprisal of it. But when Obama came back with that, myself and the people at the debate party I was at went wild!! :D

I also loved the "you think the war started in 2007" thing, as well as the "spending orgy". I know that was intended to be serious, too but it cracked the people at my party up, LOL.
