Kansas City Star: John McCain wins the first presidential debate
The MSM hits on Obama are starting. They're spinning it as we speak. And this is a writer who generally writes favorably about Obama.

4. This is all about the expectations going in...
the McCain cheerleaders are calling it for Obama.

I think the truth is, the debate was fairly tame and their guy didn't score any knockouts, so there's a tendency to call it for the other guy.

It has the rep as a lib paper but in Obama's case, they just don't like him.

I'm sure the color of his skin has nothing to do with it.

12. Another bullshit post.
The CBS and CNN polls give Obama a victory, as do the Frank Luntz and Stan Greenberg focus groups. As do most of the pundits, including Halperin, Gergen, Klein, and Dick Morris(!).

Finding some lame-ass newspaper to criticize Obama is stupid. But I'm not surprised you posted this.

49. KC Star was the last major employee-owned
paper, until it was purchased by Cap Cities in the mid-70s. The paper has gone downhill ever since.

While KCMO and KCKS are liberal, the Star's circulation area includes Johnson County, KS (very RW),

Missouri is very, very winnable, and Kansas City and St. Louis are of course where the Obama margin will come from.

TRUE FACT: a few days ago, I was running errands through a few miles from my home in south Kansas City, through the area of the big college here (University of MO/KC), all quite middle-class neighborhoods, briefly into wealthy Johnson County, Kansas, and back home, keeping track as I went.

The count of yard signs:

Obama 97
McCain 2

Those numbers seem pretty statistically significant to me.

I guess I could have veered a couple of blocks to get Obama over a hundred, but I wanted it to be an unbiased poll of the places my errands took me.

38. The Kansas City Star is NOT a liberal or
progressive newspaper.

And Yael Abouhalkah has drifted slowly, but implacably right over the years. I don't think he's an actual right-winger at this point, but I think he's lost touch with whatever liberal/progressive tendencies he might have formerly had.

It will be more interesting to see what Steve Kraske, their political correspondent says. Although Steve is quite the master of conventional thinking.

45. A few things; it is a 4 sentence statement that was posted about 10 minutes after the debate ended.
It isn't a real "column".

He says McCain "narrowly did better", hardly a ringing endorsement.

The newspaper's readers seem to disagree with the "columnist": http://www.kansascity.com/775/story/815982.html

Obama leads in their poll with about 75% saying Obama won.
