Are We Too Hard On Obama??
During the debates there were a lot of doom and gloom threads here. Then after the debate, some people here even thought McCain won. But when you look at most of the credible polls of undecideds, (CNN/CBS) Obama won easily.

I think we are too hard on Obama. With every debate exchange we are wondering why Obama didn't "add this" or "say that." But I think the average viewer just casually watches, picks up a good "vibe" or "theme" and makes a decision.

We here at DU weren't alone in our overly harsh viewing habits.

Another thread recognized this but it should be repeated.

When watching CNN's post debate commentators, they called the debate a draw. Many thought McCain won. Then, when the focus polls came in favoring Obama, all of a sudden nearly every pundit changed their toon! By the end of their coverage, most thought Obama won.

The "change-over" was almost exactly what happened on this board!

Bottom line.... We won tonight! You can't cramp every little comeback into a debate response! Sometimes I think WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER THAT! Heck, apparently even the focus group on "FIX news" were giving Obama favorable reviews.

By the way, when the Nuclear stuff came up, I thought to myself.... please Obama, you need to mention the storing of Nuclear waste in Nevada. That's a battle ground state. We need those 5 electoral votes!

So yes... I think I was too hard on Obama tonight too.

Let's rejoice... Obama did a great job.

3. Yep
Most people here (myself included) want to see Obama just thrash McCain all the time and thus don't like it when he doesn't. I think Obama did a good job overall.

8. I agree with the OP

And you. :)
We want to see him trash him. But the polls on the independents/undecideds show that his stature worked. they don't like a negative/personal fight. They want policy.

Obama gave them that.

17. I'm sorry but he didn't....

I think he was going to talk about it. He started to mention something about McCain being from out west in Arizona, but then the moderator cut him off and moved on to another topic.

5. I thought Barack would do a great job!
And I thought all through the debate that Barack was doing a great job!

Barack Obama, I predict, will be the greatest president that the US has had since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

6. Are we too hard on Obama!!
Yes, the people here are too hard on Obama. No matter what he does there is someone here that thinks it is the wrong thing to do and he has lost the election right then and there. I am tired of it and think they should either take a chill pill or a nap/drink/enema/whatever makes them get over themselves. JMHO

7. No doubt.
Obama has to be 20 times better than McCain, or he loses. My opinion? It was almost a draw, but Obama had the edge. Liberals tend to want to jump out of their own skin and try to imagine how others view a certain thing. That is how I came up with 'almost draw, Obama edge'. If I were looking at it as a well-informed, yet biased Obama supporter, then Obama won hands down, because McCain was full of shit. The fucker lied his ass off.

15. One thing he improved on a lot was being more direct with his delivery
He was still a little too hesitating at times, but there many less ers, ums, and ahs than has been his style in the past.

something you just don't see much of these days. Perhaps he can bring us back to a more dignified level.

I admire his self-discipline and his ability to focus, and always, always carrying himself respectfully. He's a real person. We haven't seen this in awhile. God bless Barack Obama.

22. Absolutely!! And I'm sick of this "The Dem has to do WAY better to win" crap
EVERY PREZ ELECTION it's like, Oh Bush won because he didn't shit on the floor, that's all he had to do because people had LOW EXPECTATIONS! Gore (Kerry, Obama) LOST because they had to do 20 points better than the opponent to "win"

What up with the double standard?

24. Well the media can't let the election get away so they spin it as a McCain win
obama can't do anything right apparently:

He did not have enough fire or he is "angry"

He is too professorial or he is an "empty suit"

All bullshit McCain had his best debate, he stood his ground.

Face facts folks every news outlet will declare the republicans a winner in EVERY debate

26. It's not unexpected on here...
We here at DU are a lot more into the nuances of the campaigns than the average viewer. Thus, we tend to overanalyze and scrutinize points, ruing missed chances - as we see them - that most people wouldn't even be aware had gone by.

Still, I think it's healthy. It keeps us sharp. On the edge. Where we need to be.

29. Sometimes out of nervousness. I found myself yelling at him a couple times
wanted him to go harder against McShame. Remember that NASTY closing remark McShame made about Obama? And Obama's closing remarks were completely on the high road... and some other opportunities where I felt Obama should have not let McShame keep talking. I just want us to win!!!!

30. I was concerned...
because I wanted Obama to get into McCain's face. Everytime McCain lied I groaned. All of his sneering little pot shots had me wanting Obama to swat him like a fly. I think this is the problem with politics in this country, and why an even close to honest discussion about who we are, who we want to be, and where we are going as a country is so impossible to have. It is always a dog fight and never an intelligent discussion.

31. Expectations game at work
We, and to a lesser extent the pundits, expected great things from Obama and a terrible performance from McCain. The rest of America wasn't so extremely biased, hence they saw that Obama won.
