What was John McCain's campaign trying to do before the campaign? They were trying to draw parallels between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama by arguing that she was more experienced than Barack Obama. By now, Obama's debates with Hillary are somewhat forgotten, and some people may have actually accepted this line of bullshit. However, this had the affect among Republicans of lowering expectations for Obama! Why? Because if you were a true believer, you probably expected John McCain to hand Obama his ass the way we are expecting Joe Biden to make mince meat of Sarah Palin.
Now, lets say you drank the Kool-Aid as a right winger, and you were expecting to see John McCain due to Barack Obama what we expect Joe Biden to do to Sarah Palin? And, you have been weaned on Fox, so you perhaps have only caught snippets designed to make Obama sound as incorhent as Palin. THEN, you watch the debate, and you see Barack Obama being respectful, yet forceful, in ripping apart McCain on McCain's alleged strength, foreign policy!
It would be like watching Sarah Palin owning Joe Biden on foreign policy! You would be expecting an easy win, but Obama beat McCain or, at worse, holds his own with McCain!
In other words, part of the polls showing Obama beating McCain may be due in part to McCain's efforts to caricature Obama as a Democratic version of Sarah Palin in terms of experience and intelligence! If Sarah Palin held her own with Joe Biden, and demonstrated a better handle on the facts than Biden on minutia, then I think we would be outraged and embarassed even if Palin did not "win," but merely held her own with Joe.
So, credit the McCain campaign with an assist in their own demise by trying to set up a narrative that Obama is less experienced than Palin, because by doing so, they set a low threshold of expectations among the right wingers who are living off the RW Rush Limbaugh Kool-Aid.
