Reminder, Obama was not preaching to the converted. We weren't his audience tonight

He did EXACTLY what he had to do.

He had to come across as Presidential. Diplomatic. Thoughtful. Even-tempered

He did. He even came across as likeable.

I know we wanted him to tromp McCain, up and down with LIAR LIAR. But, who are we? We are the people who will vote for him, no matter what. Yes, I think there is room for improvement but I give it a solid B+. He adapted quickly and engaged McCain (he was turning away in the beginning as well, but corrected it - McCain became more and more curled up - Obama became more and more open. He talked over McCain to say he was wrong, and it is in these parts the media is already investigating. CNN has the tape of Kissinger already aired and they have disproved McCain on a point he stressed very adamantly. That will get a lot of play!

McCain didn't land any solid punches. He did well in that he didn't appear as confused as he normally does, but he was ATROCIOUS in his demeanor and the way he talked down to Obama. Another thread that independents who were monitored during the debate picked up on this big time, and it counted HEAVILY against McCain.

To tell the truth, I don't remember a lot of fine points of the debate, but I do remember how nasty and horrid McCain came off. I remember he wouldn't look at Obama.

I honestly believe Obama won. He was poised and decent. He gave McCain just enough rope to hang himself with...

3. Obama got his plans across
I didn't see any from McCain. And I think that will seep in.
Obama delivered the lines people will remember.

4. He did. It wasn't what I thought it would be - but I am pleased

Obama came across as a decent human being with a brain.

McCain did not.

5. It's obvious that in all focus groups, the independents and uncommitteds responded positively. n/t

8. I absolutely agree. We've got to understand that he is trying to attract those fence-sitters. His
statesmanship in comparison to McSame's disrespect and angry temperament make Barack the clear winner.

9. Spot on!

He certainly proved he was a viable presidential candidate.

It was interesting when McCain would switch on the emotional emphasis to suck in the audience. It seemed familiar... then I realized he was doing a bitter Bruce Dern impression, seriously.

10. Yes.
I think he won the majority of those on the fence, who may have agreed with him on most of policies before, but who weren't really sure if Obama is ready. And I think he won the economy part big.

11. I agree. If he had tromped McCain that would have satisfied us,
but to everyone else Obama would have just looked like he was beating up on a sick, old man.
