108. Nope....The sound bites are "Obama just doesn't understand"
and Obama's "John is right about..." Expect to see one or the other on the air before midnight tonight.

Sorry, but McCain made a bounce back from yesterday's tantrum.

Name one thing Obama said that's going to stick in the mind of the average voter.

51. So
you think McCain won the battle only because Obama is black and you feel folks won't vote for him?

Sorry, but the debate tonight was pretty much one sided. You had one man giving factual, strong answers and another man who lied so much he probably didn't realize he was doing it.

I have no issues at all with Obama tonight. Yes, he said "I agree John" a few times but really, he has to keep a certain appearance going so as not to be labled the angry black man which would surely come if he starts calling McCain a flat out liar.

While not a complete KO, I give round 1 to Obama. Not just because I support him, but because he actually did win.

216. His eyes are a dead giveaway, imo, especially when he blares them wide open, e.g., caught off guard,
and especially when he mispronounces foreign leaders' names and has to re-pronounce them emphatically--blaring his eyes--and in a very frustrated tone, bobbing his head with each syllable. Not sure 'frustrated' is the correct adjective, though. Not sure exactly what emotion he is expressing.

169. Aye Carumba!
Believing or spreading certain right-wing smears about Senator Obama or Michelle Obama could earn you an immediate tombstone. Ignorance is not an excuse -- everyone on Democratic Underground should know better on this stuff. Some examples: The suggestion that Senator Obama is a Muslim; xeonophobic use of his middle name; spreading rumors about secret videotapes with racist rants. If you're acting like a Freeper or a "concern troll," we'll assume that you are one.

Skinner's own words. Being a concern troll is not a challenge on one's political leanings. Why you keep on referring to one's history, I have no idea.

At least then I would understand your ranting a bit better. You're attacking a poster for calling out the OP's concern and use a failed argument to defend your position. Here's a hint: At the end of the primaries, long time posters, who were loyal to Hillary, that criticized Obama's position were called concern trolls. It did not matter that they were Democrats.

And, those posters got TS'd for not following the rules; not for criticizing Obama. Those of us who've been through a couple of primary know that they get very, very ugly and a lot of folks can't control themselves.

That's not what is happening here. But, you know that. WHich is why you are reverting to juvenile comments.

Have a good night. Sleep comfortable knowing that being called out for your concern is not the same as being called a freeper troll.

You know that. Neither is matcom's. He gets to express an opinion the same way we all do. He's no troll. That's what I'm arguing.

I think a lot of us are fearful how this will be spun by the MSM, but it looks as though the tide may be turning in Barack's favor.

I thought Kerry was a slam dunk in 2004 after he debated the chimp; I was wrong. It is enough to make people nervous. I'm nervous this week. I thought it was a lock, but the shenanigans this week do have my nervous.

I know Rick Davis personally and I know what that group is capable of. I have to admit, I won't calm down until the election is over. I had a huge, almost overwhelming amount of confidence that it would be a landslide until this week. I can see where mat is coming from. Totally.

193. The shenanigans this week have totally backfired on McCain.
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 11:32 PM by Finnfan
Again, all of the polling shows this. In fact, the gap in the polls has become so wide that I don't even think that the Republicans could credibly STEAL this election.

I just have a hard time believing that any Democrat without preconceived notions could have watched the same debate I did and thought that McCain won. Maybe it's because I was watching the CNN feed with the widget that clearly showed Obama winning. I don't know. But to me (and to independents, from the polling, and many Republicans, based on the CNN widget) it wasn't even close. Not even close. Polling in the next few days will verify this.

Of course Matcom has a right to his opinion. And all other DUers, regardless of the amount of time they have been here, have a right to disagree. Matcom's loyalty to this site, and his friendship with you, have nothing to do with the correctness of his opinion.

If the media's consistent, they'll focus on McCain's HUGE mistakes (Kissinger) and his anger/smugness issue. If not, they'll say McCain did better than expected and kiss his ass. Either way, it's not uphill - at worst, we'd be back on more level footing.

31. WTF? That's idiotic.
McCain is the one who was supposed to have experience. While people on DU think he's an idiot, undecided voters (i.e., the real target audience) actually respect him. That Obama can win a foreign policy debate against him -- and, yes, Obama's winning -- is a big step in convincing them that he's commander-in-chief material.

For instance: there's this poster named matcom who has 55,000 posts at DU (how many of those are in the Lounge, by the way?) but thinks Obama lost the debate. Clearly, that shows that experience (especially experience posting to an internet message board) isn't everything.

He was stiff and didn't turn left of right of look Obama in the face. Much of the time he had clenched teeth like he was trying to smile instead of lose his temper. He looks OLD OLD OLD. His comb over is embarrassing and his tie is a terrible pick for TV. Obama looks more relaxed and speaks more "off the cuff." Obama doesn't take forever, rambling around and around to get to the point. The comments McBlinky made were partially incoherent and he was rude and condescending while Obama was a gentleman who made some good zingers while still seeming like a gentleman. McBlinky came off as a mean old stiff man.

He has done that. McCain needed to convince those voters that Obama can not be presidential. McCain has not done that. 127. So do I
I fully expected the guy to throw up and collapse in a heap after the first question. Either that, or erupt into a tirade of four-letter words. Since he did neither, I guess he did okay. Obama, on the other hand, seemed to be a lot more restrained than I would have hoped. Why didn't he KO him on the veterans support issue?

Not that it makes any difference. I don't think this will help McCain much, and even if it does, his pathetic running mate will send him back to the doldrums when she has her turn next week. That woman constantly surprises me by performing much worse than my lowest expectations.

As sick as it makes me to say it, I think that McCain controlled the debate, and his characterizations of Obama, as false as they were, scored points. If I have to be completely objective, which I must be, I think that McCain won. He was mean, and snotty -- and I think that the people watching it will respond to that. It's nauseating, but it's true. He put Obama on the defensive.

McCain displayed the old way - old prejudices, old racisms, old thinking. Unfortunately, Obama had to agree more often than not, because that old way is still a political factor.

We have seen clearly though, McCain represents the past, Obama the future. Nothing has changed.

117. Foreign policy was supposed to be McCain's strong area
And apart from the opening discussion about the economy, this debate was supposed to be centered on foreign policy issues. McCain get in a lot of digs at Obama, some of which he didn't return. But I think the fact that Obama held his own most of the evening is a very good sign. McCain came off as someone who has a belligerant attitude towards foreign policy. Obama came off as more of a statesman and a diplomat. McCain used fear as a weapon; Obama focused more on the hope of a more peaceful world in which America's good image is restored. The second debate between them will be on domestic issues and I'm pretty sure Obama will close strong in that upcoming debate. I think overall it was a good night for Obama but McCain did do better than I expected.

I was trying to remember everything wrong with it and I couldn't even remember all of them. McCain fucked up big time. Some people are also saying that Kerry won the debates in 2004 but lost the election, but what is left out of that is that Kerry who had been the targeting of all that swift-boating going in to the debates and had dropping poll numbers, picked up amazingly post debate and in the end the election was very close (and of course personally I think it was stolen). Obama is going in with numbers much better than McCain and this will only increase them. I followed and was heavily involved in that race and have followed this one closely and I honestly think Obama is going to win. Personally, I don't think race will play even a small role in this race.

44th President of The United States == Senator Barack Obama :).

Seriously, I'm pleased that all the polling indicates that independent voters think Obama won, but I didn't see either one as doing particularly well. McCain was snarly and condescending and Obama went WAY too easy. He had forty minutes to talk about the economy, and he allowed himself to get dragged into a discussion of budget cuts and earmarks. McCain's answers on foreign policy could have just easily been cribbed from Bob Dole's answers in 1996. Have you learned anything over the past decade, John?

210. Wrong. Tie goes to Obama. for several reasons.
1. It was supposed to be about foreign policy. This was perceived to be in McCain's favor. Obama proved he was just as good.
2. It negates the whole "lack of experience" attack.
3. Obama was leading going into this. The only reservations some people had were the 2 "questions" above. Since he is perceived better on McCain on other issues, by proving he is "just as good" on these issues as McCain, the issues that Obama leads on will be the deciding factor in people's minds.

211. Oh I get it. Reverse psychology.
Call the debate for McCain, thereby making Obama's team work like they're 20 points down. That's it isn't it? Because reality says something quite different than the op.

212. That is your opinion. Most people saw it differently, including the "experts."

219. Yeah, I agree. Obama never really landed a haymaker and he had several openings.

Since McCain didn't say something stupid like in past presidential debates like "Poland is not behind the iron curtain" or that "trees cause pollution" or just stand there and pee his pants, I think you're right.

I think that a majority of people in the country that watched the debate was shocked at how tenuous Obama was during this first debate.
He sounded like he was afraid to defend his own voting record.
Instead of letting McCain just stand there and tell lies about his voting record and his tax plan, what Obama should do next time is say, "Hey, I've got a novel idea. Instead of you lying about my tax plan or my voting record, and me complaining about your tax plan and your voting record, why don't you just talk about your tax plan and your voting record, and I'll talk about my tax plan and my voting record?"

If Obama doesn't come out with a little more "edge" to him, he'll lose the 2nd debate, too. He needs to get "the eye of the tiger". He needs to fight back more aggresively.

Obama didn't even complain when McCain started talking over him, he didn't even complain to Leher about it.
He wiffed at all the wrong times.

When is the 2nd debate?
I'll be interested to see if as many people watch the 2nd debate as this 1st debate since a lot of people think it ended in a tie.

220. Who appeared more presidential
McCain was condescending and rude. This is his nature. He is a bellicose slob. He can not discuss the subject in a respectful way since his temperament is if you don't agree with me then I will bet the crap out of you. Perhaps this appeals to the trash that support him. In contrast Obama is a gentleman and a person I would what representing me and our nation. McCain is just another privileged brat who didn't do crap with his opportunities that were handed to him. Without his father's pull, he would have been kicked out of the Naval Academy that he got in solely because his grandfather and father were admirals. What did he do with his ill gotten opportunity; he was a disruptive cadet who graduated at the bottom of his class. He wants people to believe that he is a great military expert because he was a POW for five years. In distinct contrast is Obama who used his opportunities to excel. He graduated at the top of his class and was a respected professor of Constitutional Law.

223. I don't think so there newbie

Obama won the first third and McCain won the last third. The big difference is that Obama looked right into the camera (connecting with the viewer) and said what he was GOING TO DO. McCain looked at Lehrer and talked about what Obama HAD said and the cold war.

CNN has it 51 Obama 38 McCain

The fucking McCain signs around here have been springing up like fucking toadstools. All the MSM has to do is tell the masses that the polls are close, and the stupid assholes will believe it.

We threatened to last election, but we're seriously paying off debt, selling unimportant possessions, and mentally preparing our brother and sister-in-law in Canada for our stint in their basement.

Don't let the assholes get you down. We all know what's at stake here. It wouldn't matter how well Obama did. All they have to do is spin spin spin about how our nation wasn't ready for a black man.
