Even in 1984, after the first debate, the media hammered Reagan on his confused style. It was so bad, Reagan wanted another debate, which he won.

Also, Bush performed so badly in 2004's first debate, Kerry shot up in the polls. McCain may really blow it here, making it very difficult for the media to proclaim him the victor.
