WTF? Maddow: "McCain will be our next President."
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 07:25 PM by regnaD kciN
She says that Obama "might" have a chance, but that she "expects" that McCain will win.

What is it with Rachel? O.K., I believe in being as cautious as the next person, but there's a line between caution and compulsive pessimism. If this is representative of the top voices on our side, no wonder we have a reputation for defeatism.

:wtf:

49. I believe I can clear this up....
I didn't hear Rachel's show today, but if this is about this book, then she's interviewed this guy before, and as you say, it's a fictional book, set in 2011, and in this fictional book, McCain is President

The last time Rachel herself said McCain would win the election was back in May or early June when Hillary was mathematically eliminated from any possible victory, yet refused to concede the nomination. Rachel thought at the time that the needlessly long drawn out primary battle would hurt us. She hasn't said that since Hillary conceded in June, to my knowledge, and certainly not since the conventions.

39. that's what I thought she said too
but in the vein of their discussion, it made sense. I still believe Obama will pull this out, bu I also know some folks in politics. And some have said the same... a lot of it hinges on voter turn out. Unfortunately for us, we're going to be dependant on the younger demographic. These are people who need to have mailed in absentee voter registrations if they're going to school out of town or state. Kerry kinda got screwed by the numbers too.
However, I'm an eternal optimist and believe Obama may have lit a fire in them.

Seriously. Her opinion is no more greater than anyone on this board. It's a prediction, she may be right, she may be wrong.

Just because she said it doesn't mean it's going down that way. Hell, she predicted Clinton would take it to the convention...

58. Exactly, who gives a damn?
Rachel has been poor mouthing our chances all year. It's the exact reason Scarborough and Harwood basically laughed her off on MSNBC a few months ago. Rachel was stunned beyond description. That's when she pounced on Scarborough in retaliation.

She's so accustomed to having her own way unchallenged on the radio show she thinks she can transfer the ignorant crap to a major cable network. It's why I can't believe so many posters here fawn over here. She has no clue regarding situational influence or margin for error if she believes McCain is likely to win. He can win, but it would require an unlikely razor tight sweep of all the states he desperately needs.

38. She's been playing the uber pessimist...
since primary season. A few months ago on her radio show, she predicted that Hillary would never concede, and claimed that she would lead her followers in a destructive floor fight at the convention. I think that she doesn't want to be as confident as a lot of people were in '04 about a Kerry win so it won't be such a letdown if McCain does pull it out.

Anyone can pull a string of words out of context and make it seem shocking, (not that you meant to) but was she kidding? did it follow "if x happens, then..."

Unless we have a transcript, or better still a video, this is hard to believe....

If she meant it, we'll hear about it after there's a youtube, until then I don't think she believes it.

Let me be clear: She's smart and a very well-read and knowledgeable person. But she doesn't relay the kind of confidence or well-reasoned discussion of the issues at hand when it comes to issues close to heart. There's now way that I believe that Maddow really thinks that McCain will win - but why the hell does she say it?

I just don't get it. The election isn't over and she has no business predicting a winner at this stage.

Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 08:00 PM by Poseidan
She is a professional talk-show host. Like in a football game, if the score is 50-0 in the third-quarter, people tend to stop watching (meaning, the networks lose money). When this scenario occurs, does the football commentator tell you, "This game is over, stop watching our commercials.", or, "The trailing team can win this, mathematically... and they just grabbed momentum!"?

50. She used to say stuff like that a few months ago...
I hated it then. She is a smart lady, I wouldn't want to be second guessing her but: When she was doing this Senator Obama had just won the nomination and there was a lot of optimism in the air. Many, (raises hand) were saying landslide for Obama back then. I felt then that what she was saying (predicting a mCcain win), was intended for those, like myself, who believed Senator Obama to be a shoe-in. I've not heard her making such predictions lately and I did not hear this one but, lately, (past 48 hrs) there has been a similar feeling going around. Many are feeling that Obama has this election all wrapped up due to mCcain's current bizarre activities. Anotherwords, maybe she is telling some of us to 'stop celebrating and get back to work!' (Sorry best I got on the topic)

59. If she has one vice as a pundit, it's
her reflexive tendency to expect the worst case scenario. She often winds up playing devil's advocate as a result, but defends her position well.

The slightly panicky, sky is falling attitude seems a calculated part of her persona -- a way to open up a wider range of debate. It makes for more gripping, albeit alarming radio/tv. It also helps put forth a framework for useful contingency planning.

Rachel is one of our greatest pundits and the brightest political media star to rise since Olbermann. She does sometimes need someone to talk her down though, but she's aware of this. The regular segment,"Talk Me Down" where she faces off against a guest debater on her new tv show, couldn't be named better.
