24. Except in Kung Fu, it's a ploy to catch your opponent off guard
Palin isn't just feigning it. It's like fighting an ACTUAL drunken monkey...

2. Biden: While I agree that we be forceful in our dealings with Iran...
...I don't think that means we can't try a diplomatic approach.

Palin: I like pudding!!!

4. Help her at every turn, very graciously
"I understand Ms. Palin to mean..." Put her words in grown up terms - and then bury the crazy ideas.

19. Wait 'til she starts repeating everything he says:
Biden: “I was amazed at how organized the Palestinian election authority was, how competent they were in setting up their polling places and the poll workers they had.”

Palin: “I was amazed at how organized the Palestinian election authority was, how competent they were in setting up their polling places and the poll workers they had.”

Biden: "That's what I said"

Palin: "That's what I said"

Biden: "What?"

Palin: "What?"

Biden: "Are you copying me?"

Palin: "Are you copying me?"

Biden: "Stop it! That's annoying!"

Palin: "Stop it! That's annoying!"

Biden: "OK..."

Palin: "OK..."

Biden: "I'm Sarah Palin and I'm a big doofus!"

Palen: "Gwen! He's being mean to me!!"

22. Yes, and that's going to be hard!!!
During both the Gibson interview and the Couric interview, both long-term, professional interviewers were not able to keep their faces from showing their absolute disbelief that Palin could really be that dumb with her answers.

It will be hard for Joe, but he will do it!!! He is THAT polished!

8. Welcome to DU!
:hi: Palin won't be able to shuffle through her 3x5 cards for the debate either. Millions of people will be watching only to see how long it is before the clown walks off the stage in embarrassment.

9. He debates "his understanding" of McShame's positions and
largely leaves her to debate herself, acknowledging her (and whatever gibberish she has just said) politely, but only as much as needed to avoid coming off patronizing or condescending.

10. McCain will chew off his own arm on prime time TV before a VP debate is permitted

There will be no VP debate.

They will take political damage for not having one, but they will be laughingstocks forever if they let Palin talk for more than 30 seconds.

12. I'm thinking now that he should just ignore her completely...
...pretend she's not there, and focus only on the moderator, answering the questions and displaying his policies and his knowledge. As though that vile twit isn't even in the room. Don't even give her the benefit of acknowledgement, just have an intelligent discussion with the moderator.

and carefully arch his eyebrows, just a little, everytime she channels Miss Teen South Carolina.

He should basically ignore her.

Inject zingers where appropriate... which will pretty much be the whole time.

21. I'm starting to think this format will favor Biden even more
it's setup so that there is very little interaction between the opponents. I think Joe should just answer the questions straightforward to the public. When he makes sense and Palin doesn't - it'll be obvious who is better for VP

She has been putting on this dumb act. Remember the old SNL skit where Reagan was a doddering old man when in the public, then when he got behind closed doors he took charge. Watch out it's a trap!:hide:

Barack had to debate Alan Keyes, after all. (He got real good at that "I'm going to be tactful and dignified and pretend you didn't say what you just said" look.)

29. It's like when I was in fifth grade and I wrestled a girl at a tournament
You need to just sift through any apprehensions and go out and do your own thing. Be assertive and concentrate on your offense. If they make a mistake you capitalize on it. Boy, girl, genius, idiot, knowledgeable, ignorant. It doesn't matter who that person is on the other side, you need to not get overconfident or take them lightly and you focus on what you do best.

The main thing, as I said, is sift through any apprehensions, treat them like anybody else and forget the sideshow aspects of it.

30. Actually, you bring up a serious point
H2O Man had a thread about Palin and his sense that she may exhibit traits of Borderline Personality Disorder - the one thing I learned in my years of counseling, in working with individuals with this diagnosis, you have to stay on message - be firm and repetitive with the basic message; repeat your points in a clear, concise, almost robotic method, with little emotion and a very matter-of-fact voice and manner. Stay calm, cool and collected. Keep emotion and knee-jerk reaction out of your voice -- they can be manipulative, and tend to push buttons. Otherwise, you may be dragged down tangential roads that have nothing or little to do with the matter at hand.
