BIG difference between tonight and last night's Letterman shows.....
Last night Dave called McCain a real American hero (this of course was to set up the way he was about to knock him down) ..... BIG applause from the audience in honor of McCain's heroism.

Tonight, Letterman repeats that same line almost vertabtum ........... and nothing.

Nothing but silence from the audience.

Very telling.

1. Really? Holy cow. I can't wait to see it here on the Left Coast.
I am tired of hearing what a great hero McLoser is. If he ever was, he ain't no more!

2. I don't get the hero thing.
I don't see the man as a hero. I feel really bad he lived in a box for 5 and 1/2 years, but I also feel bad that thousands of others also lived in POW camps. Why is HE so special? 99.99999% of POW's suffer in silence, and do not use their POW status for personal gain. THAT is a hero, IMO.

13. Dave's just saying "hero" as a disclaimer
that way nobody can come back and confront him with McCain's supposed hero "immune from criticism" clause.

It was really a back-handed type thing.

14. Michael Moore has a great take on that in his new book
called Mike's Election Guide 2008. I can't do it justice, but basically he simply explains what we (the US) were actually doing in Vietnam. Nobody was a hero in that war. We were bombing civilian targets and killing thousands to prop up a puppet regime which overthrew their elected leaders. How would you feel if someone did that to our country? MM really puts it in perspective.

16. moore is right.
if some country invaded us and began dropping bombs/napalm/agent orange, shooting us, destroying our lives, how do you think we would treat them? we are currently torturing people who have not even been accused of actual crimes against us. the hypocrisy is stunning. mccain is no hero and i do not respect the service of ANY military person who engages in harming innocent civilians. it would even be different if the military person were willing to denounce the war and their own actions in it. mccain and many others still think we were right to be in vietnam. fuck that shit.

3. I wonder if the audience last night was stacked with McCain supporters...
It would make sense that some of them would have been there, right?

I thought the studio audience's reaction to Dave last night was tepid.

4. He always seems to have half dems half repubs. He polls them on the show sometimes
I don't understand why a republican would go to a taping of his show. Are they too stupid to know he's making fun of their heroes?

15. Actually I thought last night's audience was fairly subdued
I remember thinking they must be either drugged, or just didn't care, because they didn't react very well about anything McCain last night.

Tonight's audience was more lively.

5. The top ten was great!!!! Top ten facts about Sarah Palin.
From the Deputy Mayor of Wasilla: Recently, in order to beef up her foreign policy credentials, Sarah Palin went to the International House of Pancakes!

And #1, delivered by the head of the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce: The only person I know that is NOT afraid to go hunting with Dick Cheney!

10. Dave is totally pissed
he was over the top funny, but he is genuinely angry about being lied to. How stupid is McCain? I liked when he mentioned it to Paris Hilton, mentioning that he disrespected her too (the ad) she said "revenge is sweet!" ;-)
