Just Released Memo Suggests McConniption Will Bail On Tomorrow's Debate
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 09:33 PM by jefferson_dem
Mississippi Debate Update

For those political junkies still wondering whether tomorrow night's scheduled presidential debate in Mississippi will happen, a just-released memo from John McCain's campaign casts doubt on the prospect.

"Tomorrow, John McCain will return to Capitol Hill where he will work with all sides to build a bipartisan solution that protects taxpayers and keeps Americans in their homes," said spokesman Brian Rogers in a memo detailing the events of the day and casting McCain as a consensus-builder and Democrats in the role of spoilers. (Full memo after the jump.)

Now, McCain does have his own plane, which means that he could theoretically be in Washington for negotiations through the early afternoon and then jet down to Mississippi for the 9 p.m. ET debate.

But the tone of McCain's memo seems to suggest he is not planning to waver from his original call yesterday to suspend tomorrow night's debate to a later date.

Will Barack Obama stay in Washington tomorrow too? Or will he, as planned, head to Oxford?

The staring contest continues . . .

Full memo from the McCain campaign:

To Interested Parties:

To address our current financial crisis, John McCain suspended his campaign and returned to Washington, D.C., today to help build a bipartisan consensus for a proposal that would protect the American taxpayer.

Despite today's news reports, there never existed a "deal," but merely a proposal offered by a small, select group of Members of Congress. As of right now, there exists only a series of principles, including greater oversight and measures to address CEO pay. However, these principles do not enjoy a consensus in Congress.

At today's cabinet meeting, John McCain did not attack any proposal or endorse any plan. John McCain simply urged that for any proposal to enjoy the confidence of the American people, stressing that all sides would have to cooperate and build a bipartisan consensus for a solution that protects taxpayers.

However, the Democrats allowed Senator Obama to run their side of the meeting. That did not work as the meeting quickly devolved into a contentious shouting match that did not seek to craft a bipartisan solution.

At this moment, the plan that has been put forth by the Administration does not enjoy the confidence of the American people as it will not protect that taxpayers and will sacrifice Main Street in favor of Wall Street.

The bottom line is that as of tonight, there are not enough Republican or Democrat votes for the current plan. However, we are still optimistic that a bipartisan solution will be found. Republicans and Democrats want a deal that will protect the taxpayers.

Tomorrow, John McCain will return to Capitol Hill where he will work with all sides to build a bipartisan solution that protects taxpayers and keeps Americans in their homes.

7. By going to the debate.
That's all Obama needs to do. If he needs to fly back to vote or something, he can easily do that.

3. "keep Americans in their homes"
Well, that is funny..since PALIN told Couric that those being foreclosed on should NOT BE REWARDED because of their "poor decision making"

9. What a smarmy piece of crap he has become!
I especially like this part:

"At today's cabinet meeting, John McCain did not attack any proposal or endorse any plan. "

Probably because he didn't understand what anyone was talking about, seeing as how he showed absolutely no interest in this "crisis" until a few days ago.

21. He didn't attack any proposal or endorse any plan, because he didn't open his fricking mouth.
According to those in the room, McCain didn't say a word. He just sat there like a lump in the chair. So much for displaying leadership.

12. Yeah, we all saw how McCain "helped" today. Obama heads to Mississippi.
If McCain doesn't show up, Obama can hold a townhall.

This is all about canceling the VP debate and we're not falling for it.

all of the reports from the congressional correspondants on several networks say that McCain said a great big bag of NOTHING in the "meeting" today, and even House pubs don't know what the hell is up with him. He is just getting in the way at this point.

16. I feel sorry for the American people and the university
The university has spent 4 to 5 million on this event, hundreds of volunteers have prepped for it......and the chickenshit won't show up? I don't think the university can postpone the event and no amount of delay will help McChickenShit or Ms Fallin. I say let Obama have a townhall meeting then and let America have a primetime slot to see what Leadership is all about and to get to know the next President of the United States.......let McChickenShit eat cake!

Bring on Obama..........

Obama wins no matter what. If McLiar comes to the debate it will show the bailout did not really require him to "save the day". If he does not come Obama gets all the airtime and looks like he can multitask.
