Has A Presidential Election Ever Been Suspended? Would That Be Appropriate Here?
One more observation in light of McCain's demand that the campaigns and debate should be "suspended." Does this affect the election?

Will the November 4 election be suspended?

Afterall, if we are delaying the campaign and the debates, doesn't this give the American people less time to consider the proposals and positions of the candidates? To avoid limiting the information received by the American people, wouldn't we also need to post-pone the election, as well, or we may only have a week or two of campaigns and debates before it is time to elect a President.

When was the last time an election was post-poned?

1. Giuliani tried to do that to the Mayoral election after 9/11. It didn't go over well.

2. I don't pretend to be a political/historical expert...
...but never in my lifetime, which goes back to JFK/1960. I think you could safely add the pres. elections of 1948, 1952 & 1956 to that.

The election of 1864 went on, right in the middle of a civil war. Also, FDR, elected in the middle of the Depression, and during WWII.

Anybody?

4. NO presitential election has EVER been postponed
Not even during the midst of a Cival War.

To do so would require an act of Congress.

Ain't Gonna Happen

5. Act of Congress not required anymore.
Just NPSD-51. And a few Executive Orders: #13303, #13315, #13350, #13364, #13422, #13438.

6. Nope, Article II is clear
It takes an act of Congress to set the date of a presidential election.

12. I think the neocons would just as soon completely throw the election
and make things as bad as possible for Obama / Biden. The hope would be to win it all back in 2012.

13. If Lincoln didn't postpone the 1864 election over the civil war, or FDR over WWII or Hoover
over the Great depression, why would it be appropriate to do so now?

15. Never happened. Not even once. Never even close. Not in 1864, not in 1944.
And it won't happen now.

19. As I put on my tinfoil hat...
I would not be at ALL surprised if McCain suggests that.

I'd be a teeny tiny bit surprised but not so much, if that was the goal along with this "let's postpone the debate" bull shit.
