ABC/WaPo poll: Obama up 52-43
"Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll.

More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent. Two weeks ago, in the days immediately following the Republican National Convention, the race was essentially even, with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 47 percent."

50. My local right wing radio station covered it
These are the ones who sandwich Limbaugh in between two local Limbaugh wannabes. I almost mentioned this last week when the same station played a clip of a McCain speech and then followed that claim with the announcer saying "Factcheck.org has investigated that McCain claim and determined it is false." I about drove into a ditch when I heard that. And then this morning their lead news item was this poll.

What is happening here is that there are a whole lot of people who are not inherently evil, but just tend toward the authoritarian end of the political spectrum. They are naturally more comfortable with the right wing with their tradition of "law and order" rhetoric. But this crass bailout has really shaken them up. This whole bailout program is so obscene it is bringing together the most liberal and the most conservative who can all agree that this is anti-American in every respect.

The irony is that McCain is now trying to position himself as the man of the people, but none of that seems to be working for him. Buddying up to the 29% President (soon to become the 21% President I'm sure) all these years may prove his undoing.

8. An 11 point swing in two weeks? No wonder John McCain seems so
pissy lately, I'll bet his internal polling showed a huge shift. The race really began shifting after Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson, and then Tina Fey's devastating portrayal didn't help, and now the Wall St. meltdown. McCain can't seem to catch a break, but I'll bet he's got something big planned after meeting with all the foreign heads of state this week. I just hope Obama's good and prepared for Friday night's debate.

This is almost an entirely Republican owned and McCain-and-staff-abetted mess. Make no mistake about it.

Phil Gramm as Treasury Secretary will be the kick of America's coffin into a 200 foot well. It would be instant peonage after corporations and the wealthy are allowed to legally steal the last crumbs from us (like they aren't ALREADY doing that).

21. polls
As much as I like the poll cited, I hasten to mention that the Wash. Post is not to be trusted and ABC is a shithole of crap. This is the time to redouble our efforts, e-mail and call your politicians, talk up our candidate, and support local dems. It is a chance if we work really hard to get not just a dem. potus, but nail the coffin in which the rethugs are put to rest. Don't gloat to republican friends, ask them to join in a new way of running our country. Out with the old, in with the new, it is after all a new century. Maybe we can save the earth after all.

52. Individually the polls are useful (scientifically)
But they do influence the tome of the coverage, and that can become a self-fulfilling prophesy. It is always a good thing when the polls go your way.

Also it is valid to look at the movement in the same polling organizations' results. Every one of the recent polls represents a change in Obama's favor by 1-3 points (or more).

Congress is growing a pair and standing up to the Bush ripoff scheme. This will continue to work in Obama's favor. Even though McCain is trying to adopt the same positions as Obama, McCain is badly hurt by his connection to Bush and lobbyists. This bailout discussion is so big that it will probably dominate the news for at least another week. So I don't see McCain advancing during that time.

And right about the time the bailout story settles down, we have the Biden/Palin debate. The risk there is that she may exceed the very low expectations. I certainly can't see Obama/Biden losing any support in that debate, but I could see McCain picking up some uncommitted support if she somehow makes it through the debate without threatening to start 4 more wars.

41. If you heard his speech yesterday about the bailout proposal you'd have the same feeling of trust
Obama makes it a point about oversight and accountability in allowing not just one individual calling the shots but a group to oversee this and weigh in on the proposal and since the people are the ones putting up this money, he said it should be their investment, and any returns on this investment he said goes them them! Don't know what return if any but shit... has anyone ever heard of Bush having oversight and accountability? All one needs to do is look at congress, court and the president and see what if any oversight Bush wants.

42. Wall Street go to HELL! GOBAMA!!!!
It seems the latest republican assault on the Constitution and the vast majority of average citizens in this country is having an affect.

All through the Bush presidency these Wall Street scumbags have preached the free market, let the market decide, right? Oh and socialism is a horrible anti-american practice and should be fought against to the death.

Now the very same bastards are DEMANDING the Federal government bail their sorry asses out of the mess they created! Thats SOCIALISM you f'n assholes! Your GOD the market decided you are no longer needed! LOL!

Of course these thieves expect to walk away from their mistakes with their golden parachutes intact, paid for by you and me!

President Obama is going to have one hell of a housecleaning job to do starting in January. The republicans have destroyed so much of what made America a great country. Its sad and scary, I hope my fellow citizens wake up and do the right thing this fall before its too late.

53. Great news in this poll! Love the dramatic swing to Obama from Independents--now 53% to 39%.
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 09:06 AM by flpoljunkie
Overall, Obama and McCain are tied among men in the new poll, while Obama has opened up a sizable lead among women. The candidates divide white voters, 50 percent for McCain to 45 percent for Obama, while Obama has an overwhelming advantage among African Americans, 96 percent to 3 percent.

Independents, key swing voters, now break for Obama, 53 percent to 39 percent, reversing a small lead for McCain after the Republican convention. McCain is the choice of 86 percent of Republicans, while about as many Democrats, 88 percent, back Obama.

In the new poll, voters once again gave Obama higher marks than McCain when it comes to dealing with the economy, 53 percent to 39 percent. Two weeks ago, Obama's edge on the question was a narrow five points, his lowest of the campaign. Among independents, Obama's advantage on the economy -- now 21 points -- is greater than at any point in the campaign.

McCain's advantages on national security issues have also been blunted. Two weeks ago, when those surveyed were asked who they trusted to deal with a major unexpected crisis, McCain led 54 percent to 37 percent. That lead is gone.

Similarly, McCain's once-sizable advantage in dealing with the battle against terrorism has all but disappeared. There were also big shifts toward Obama on handling Iraq and international affairs more broadly.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 10:51 PM by writes3000
They did not add a higher percentage of blacks to this poll. So they did not "add more blacks."

They did poll more blacks so they could report separately about the opinion of blacks. If they only polled 50 blacks, that wouldn't have been a representative sample.

But they did not add all of those extra people to their poll.

Tell your other poll that they're wrong. Again.

Forget Florida and Ohio. If these numbers are accurate, it's time to start talking about North Carolina, West Virginia, and Montana. Christ, if the stars align correctly, perhaps the more moderate Nebraska district is in play with these sorts of numbers. Just look at the places Reagan won with his landslide.
