Google phone to cost $179, go on sale Oct. 22

Google's search engine changed the way people find information. On Tuesday the Internet giant took a step toward transforming the way people receive information with the long-awaited debut of the first mobile phone to use its software known as Android.

The phone, which will go on sale at T-Mobile on Oct. 22 for $179 — $20 less than the iPhone — closely resembles a T-Mobile's Sidekick, with a big-screen and a keyboard that slides out from underneath and contains an extra key dedicated to Internet search. The device also has WiFi capability and GPS built in.

But what is special about the device is that it is designed to function as a full-fledged personal computer running any kind of application a developer can dream up.

"This is as good a computer as you had a few years ago," said Google co-founder Larry Page at the press conference Tuesday.

Alongside him, Google co-founder Sergey Brin joked that the first application he wrote took advantage of the phone's accelerometer and measured how long it took for him to catch the phone, or for it to hit the ground, after it was thrown up in the air.

It's not terribly sexy. I don't know why they didn't hire some really sexy designers to dress it up.

1. My phone cost 7 bucks, is black and has 12 buttons.
I has cool 'hangs on wall' technology and cord-full operation!

15. Is it easy to find too? Won't get misplaced?

Does it need a battery that needs recharging?

I bet it even lasts for 10 or more years with needing to be replaced.

6. Fuck Google, Fuck Apple, Fuck all these bastards
Fuck these companies that want to force you into a multi-year agreement, and require you to have good credit. I hate that the only way I can get a cel phone is to go through one of these ripoff prepaid companies. Things didn't use to operate this way. I've never had to sign a multi-year contract to get electric service, basic cable, or even your basic land-line phone.

Sorry for the rant, but this sort of stuff just really irks me.

12. These phones are HEAVILY subsidized....
If there was not a contract required, the upfront payment would be HUGE.

13. Yes, the price tag on this phone without a contract is...
...$399.

Which is why they want two years of your business. So they can make their money somehow.

I agree in principle--we shouldn't have to sign these lengthy contracts--but they are heavily subsidized. I mean, cutting edge technology for under $200? Do you know how long it took before VCR's cost only $200?

19. Sorry to say, but if I went out and bought a phone on eBay
for cash( say $400.00 ), I don't think AT&T or Sprint or who-ever will let me use their services without a two year contract.

14. Are you locked into using only T-Mobile as your carrier?
I hate phones that make you use a particular carrier. Like the iPhone with AT&T.

Let me buy the phone and use it on whatever freaking network I want.
