Obama Hits McCain Over Zapatero Gaffe, Compares Him To Cheney

Obama Hits McCain Over Zapatero Gaffe, Compares Him To Cheney

By Greg Sargent - September 22, 2008, 10:40AM

In an interview with the same Miami radio station that elicited the now-notorious McCain Zapatero flub, Obama hits McCain for refusing to say whether he'd meet with the Spanish prime minister.

Interview to the Democrats' presidential candidate, Barack Obama (English Version)

The key moment comes around two-thirds of the way in. Asked if he'd meet with Zapatero, Obama said:

"Of course. Spain is a NATO ally, and the fact that Senator McCain indicated that he might not meet with Zapatero I think indicates that he wants to continue the Cheney policies of trying to dictate American foreign policy instead of trying to build cooperation. I think that's a mistake."

1. That's a pretty dignified response, since its clear that McCain didn't
comprehend the question, or if he did, he made a major gaffe. Obama used a kind manner to jab at the connection between McCain and Bush*/Cheney.

2. McCain is like a orgre with a horse throat
Can't talk and can only reply by swinging and hitting things with his stick.

3. The McCain campaign handed Obama a gift with this one
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 11:29 AM by BattyDem
They could have simply said McCain misunderstood the question, he had a hard time with the interviewer's accent ... whatever. Then if Obama said anything, they could have attacked him by suggesting that he's trying to make it an issue about McCain's age or he's just being petty, etc.

Instead, they announced that McCain meant every word of what he said, which made the statements fair game. Obama and the Dems have every right - and every reason - to attack McCain because of those statements because he basically said "f*ck you" to a NATO ally!

If they can't even make the right decision on how to handle a gaffe, how will they make the right decision on how to handle a crisis?

edit: typo

8. You Are Being Charitable - Didn't McCain's Campaign Refer To Spain As An Adversary?
My take is that Obama could have really lit into McCain, but decided to hit McCain in an understated way.

9. I always want Obama to hit McCain harder than he does - especially when McCain really screws up
I suppose Obama's trying to act "statesman-like" ... but sometimes you just have to slam him!
