The Point: Disturbing line Palin tossed off in address
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/currents/20080921_The_Point__Disturbing_line_Palin_tossed_off_in_address.html

...

"Al-Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America," said Palin, and then, referring to Barack Obama, quipped: "He's worried that someone won't read them their rights."

Quite apart from the cheap distortion of Obama's position, typical of most campaign rhetoric, this is a classic lynch-mob line. It is the taunt of the drunken lout in the cowboy movie who confronts a sheriff barring the prison door - He wants to give 'im a trial? It is the precise sentiment that Atticus Finch so memorably sets himself against in Harper Lee's masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird, when he agrees to defend a supposedly indefensible black man charged with rape (falsely, as it turns out).

...

This statement from Palin highlights the BIGGEST reason to fear her ..

3. It should be remembered
every damn day - that the bunch in charge has a simple dreadful record of convictions in alleged terrorist cases in large measure because of the disrespect they have for the constitution in dealing with those cases.

6. I agree. The assumption that you are absolutely right IS dangerous.
So right that you don't need to depend upon some ir-relevant process the rest of us call Rational thought nor any of it's manifestatons like Justice.

It's called Blasphemy.

8. I agree - it's a statement that should be given greater attention
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 09:53 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
It's a comment that evokes the corrupt stench of Dick Cheney and the policies of torture, Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, violation of the Geneva Convention, and the disgraceful and shameless way the Bush Administration has eroded our Constitution including the Supremacy Clause (treaties are also the supreme law of the land). In sum, it's an attitude that all patriotic Americans should denouce.

14. They laugh at the very idea of accused people having rights
when the idea of accused people having rights is enshrined IN THE CONSTITUTION, IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS!

There is a reason those rights were spelled out there...so the United States would be better than countries that imprisoned people for no reason, that tortured them to get the answers its rulers wanted out of them or to force them to implicate others whether they were guilty or not. That put them on trial and made them answer to trumped-up charges in kangaroo courts in which they would invariably be found guilty and sentenced to death.

We wanted to be different. We wanted to be better.

But it seems like now all we care about again is vigilante justice, justice in the eye of the beholder. If you think they're guilty, torture 'em first, then find 'em guilty, hang 'em high and be done with it. Play judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. It's the new American way.

18. Exactly, they laugh at the very idea of accused people
and when SHE'S ACCUSED of anything, well, they Laugh at THAT too.. and that's what pisses ME off the MOST..

Why should WE follow the law if they don't? Oh, that's right, because they'll throw OUR ASSES in JAIL if we decide that the case against US has NO VALIDITY..

The Nerve of these Neanderthals..

Stick 'em back in their ICE CUBES in Alaska and wait another ten thousand years to thaw them out.

Actually THROW HER and Her Shadow Govenor Creep Todd in JAIL for Abuse of Power.

I'd like to see some Alaskans kick McCain's Lawyers asses all the way to the Border.

Happiness is a McCain Lawyer headed SOUTH with a Palin Under each arm :)

15. Obama had a great comeback to this...
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 10:11 PM by backscatter712
IIRC, when Palin made this same sort of statement at the RNC, Obama responded by saying that before you can read them their rights, you have to catch them first, and the Bushies haven't gotten that far...

That, and he admonished the Rethugs "Don't mock the Constitution!"

Aha! Linkage!

I will have to die anyway.

Death is part of the nature of human existance

While I am alive, I want to live in a free nation and not a police state

All humans must die, but only a small number have the privilege of living in freedom

25. She can't say anything remotely intelligent to people who
can't think for themselves and probably listen to talk radio all day. I've listened to some of that years ago and most of the people who call in just repeat talking points, but never really debate anything. They just repeat some ignorant statement which is usually a made-up lie.
