Clearly, blue-collar white workers would be better off under a Democratic administration, but the Democrats (ever since the passing of the Civil Rights Act) have been seen as collaborators with the blacks and willing participants in the erosion of white advantage in American society. It doesn't matter if Bill Clinton or Al Gore or John Kerry are all white men; they are still viewed as traitors.
But let's get to Obama. It's clear that most of the country identifies McCain with Bush, and most of the country hates Bush (particularly on economics). Naturally, we assume that most of the country will want to vote for Obama in order to recuperate the economic damage done by the Republicans. However, then we'd be forgetting the all-important "Invisible Wages of Whiteness". Voting for a candidate like Obama may better one's statistical economic standing, but it would result in a severe reduction in the Invisible Wage of Whiteness. If the White House is no longer off-limits for blacks, then American society is one step closer to a truly equal playing field.
So how much are racists willing to give up in terms of economic well-being in order to preserve their race privileges? How much are the Invisible Wages worth? $20 000? $30 000? Is it, astoundingly, priceless?
