CBS Troopergate - Palin did authorize Monegan Washington trip - eliminates excuse for firing

Apparently Palin's justification for firing Monegan, an unathorized trip to Washington has just gone up in smoke, she authorized the trip.

From CBS

(CBS/AP) Just when it seemed the Alaska investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of a state official might have been scuttled by the pressures of presidential politics, another turn of events has kept it going.

Palin's firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan last July, allegedly after pressure by her, her husband and staff members on Monegan to fire her ex-brother-in-law was ignored, is at the center of the investigation (known as Troopergate) into whether Palin abused her power.

Palin originally agreed to participate in the investigation, authorized in July by the Republican-controlled legislature. She told Alaskans, "Hold me accountable." Once named to the McCain ticket, however, Palin backpedaled. She has since refused to testify.

Palin has maintained that she fired Monegan not over the status of Trooper Mike Wooten, but over budget disagreements - specifically a trip Monegan planned to Washington which she said was unauthorized.

Earlier this week the McCain campaign released a series of e-mails detailing the frustration several Palin administration officials experienced in dealing with Monegan. The "last straw," the campaign said, was a trip Monegan planned in July to seek federal money for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases.

Palin, saying she did not authorize the expenses for the travel, cited that trip as a primary example of the insubordination that led to Monegan's firing.

However, Palin's chief of staff did authorize the travel to Washington

She really had many people in Alaska fooled. They're not going to be too happy once they see who she really is.

13. Can this investigation be snuffed out at this point?
Seriously? Can the republikans still make this case "disappear" that like they have done so many times in the past. If not this would be the October surprise that so many of us are waiting for. Just as long as the fascist don't cover it up or ignore it like they so disparately want to.

By the way, Kick to the top... for the hope that this story sticks.

14. No the investigator says that he has enough material based on emails
and depositions that he is able to issue a fair final report even without the testimony of those that are refusing to testify.

15. They've continued to make it worse for themselves..
These next couple weeks should be interesting.

Apparently, even without the subpoenas honored by the staffers and Todd Palin they can still proceed with this investigation and have it completed in time. It's coming to a head by 10/10.

What's weird is that as late as 8/13 she was issuing a memo to her staff urging complete cooperation, even telling the investigators that subpoenas wouldn't be necessary. She said "hold me accountable."

And then she got picked by McSame and everything went into lockdown mode within 24 hrs after that.

I wonder what the hell kinda dirt there is on her?

Bad and shady judgment clearly demonstrated by McShame, by sending his pack of wolves to Alaska to try to cover this up. McShame was reckless and did not put country first with his VP selection.

32. So what does that say for tom brokaw and tucker carlson who
say "troopergate is nothing"? They need to be held accountable as this unfolds.

brokaw can use his old line that they don't just have egg on their face they have an omelette. Only we know this isn't a mistake.

And, what does this say about palin who knows it could be verified that she was lying?

33. It was clear it was a lie as soon as her "truth squad" said it
The story all along has been that she didn't fire him, that she offered him another job in the administration and he turned it down. She offered him a job running the Alcoholic Beverage Control board, where she said he could continue to work on one of his pet issues of the alcohol problems in Bush Alaska. The first problem with that was that she said she was removing him because she wasn't happy with the direction he was taking on the alcohol problem in the Bush, and the second was that the head of the ABC board basically just issues liquor licenses, and doesn't do much of anything to help deal with those problems.

And now there is a third problem with her original lie. If he was fired for "gross insubordination," as her truth squad alleged, why would she offer him another job in state government instead of just firing him outright. Or having her acting chief of staff fire him, she didn't even have the decency to do it herself which is her MO with firing people.
