The Big Whisper: What's Up With John McCain?

The Big Whisper: What's Up With John McCain?
Katharine Zaleski | September 18, 2008 09:55 AM

John McCain has been all over the map recently, especially when it comes to the economic crisis that's been hammering Wall Street. He also managed to make some interesting - or rather, bizarre - remarks about Spain on Wednesday. See more articles below on McCain's actions over the last few weeks.

McCain Remarks Appear To Reject Spain As Ally:

Late Wednesday night, news made its way from the other side of the Atlantic that John McCain, in an interview with a Spanish outlet, had made a series of bizarre responses to a question regarding that country's prime minister.

"Would you be willing to meet with the head of our government, Mr. Zapatero?" the questioner asked, in an exchange now being reported by several Spanish outlets.

McCain proceeded to launch into what appeared to be a boilerplate declaration about Mexico and Latin America -- but not Spain -- pressing the need to stand up to world leaders who want to harm America.

McCain Flip-Flops On AIG Bailout: Rejects It Tuesday, Says It's Okay Wednesday:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain, a day after flatly rejecting the idea of a taxpayer bailout for American International Group Inc., said Wednesday that the government had been "forced" into proposing an $85 billion loan to the nation's largest insurer.

McCain appeared to soften his opposition to the bailout proposed by the Federal Reserve, treating the plan as a necessary evil to protect ordinary Americans with finanical ties to AIG and asserting that such a financial collapse should not be allowed to happen again. He also called for an investigation to uncover any wrongdoing.

NY Times: McCain All Over The Place On The Economy:

On Monday morning, as the financial system absorbed one of its biggest shocks in generations, Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."

Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers, whom he described as the backbone of the economy, were productive and resilient. By Tuesday he was calling the economic situation "a total crisis" and denouncing "greed" on Wall Street and in Washington.

20. No apology needed
It is actually a tragic story.

A guy that at least had some scrupples (way over rated by the way) sells his soul to the Repuke party then begins to lose his mind. Rod Serling is going to appear on our TV (in black and white of course) in a month and close the show. Burgess Merideth will play McCain.

3. The Spain story completely blew me away.
How could he not know Spain is an ally? A NATO member? Where is the ambiguity. And, what the hell does Latin America have to do with it.

This one should go in an ad with Czechoslovakia, Al-Qeada in Iran, Pakistan/Iraq border, and any more that can be dug up.

Unfit for command. Fit for the Nursing Home.

16. maybe that's why they're letting his stump speech
air in it's entirety. His bumbling and stuttering was in fine form today. He couldn't even READ his notes.
I would be embarrassed for him if I wasn't so afraid of him. I actually detest this senile whack-job.
Since he has now dissed the reporters and press,(his former 'base) they may be letting him fry on his own and expose himself for what he is.
It seems he is getting WORSE by the week.

21. also Emiliano Zapata, Viva Zapata!
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 11:09 AM by mcg
He might be getting his centuries mixed up.

"Viva, Zapata!" starring Marlon Brando

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viva_Zapata!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emiliano_Zapata

I guess McCain didn't get the word that Zapata died in 1919,
or did McCain with his superpowers raise Zapata from the dead?

The Zapatistas got their name from Zapata.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapatista_Army_of_National_Liberation

McCain thinks that anyone with a last name beginning with "Zapat" must be from Mexico.

Here's where McCain puts Spain on the map ...

22. Viva Zapata! is McCain's favorite movie!
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 11:19 AM by mcg
EW interview with John McCain ...

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20217335,00.html
... We read somewhere that Viva Zapata! is your favorite movie of all time...

Elia Kazan made three movies with Marlon Brando. One was A Streetcar Named Desire, one was On the Waterfront, and the third was Viva Zapata! Many people think Brando's performances in Streetcar and Waterfront were his best. I think Zapata! was his best. I'm in the minority about this. But go back and watch the scene of his wedding night, with (Brando) and Jean Peters — the actress who later married Howard Hughes, who made her give up acting — when she teaches him to read by taking out the Bible and reading it with him. That's a poignant scene. ...

7. McCain Is Trying To Blame Obama For His Incoherence By Calling for Townhall Meetings
Obama should just ignore and focus on the economy, and ask how do townhall meetings and a 9/11 style commission demostrate leadership? There are three debates, and McCain should come to terms with himself, so he can get his lies straight.

12. Having lost 3 family members to Alzlheimer's it's obvoius to me McCain has it,
and is moving beyond early stages into the moderate stages of the disease where his confusion is apparent for the world to see.

If republicans cared about our country they should insist that McCain step down and select a candidate who is at least experienced and mentally sound.

The media ought to be demanding that McCain have a brain scan and other tests evaluated by independent physicians to determine whether or not my strong suspicion is true. There are other forms of dementia as well that are common in people his age. This is not age discrimination, just dealing in facts.

His speech, mannerisms, expressions, increasing confusion and short fuse are all suggestive of some form of dementia.

25. Well short fuse was at least since college so we can't
tie that in but otherwise agree...there is something going on.

If it was just things like the Spain gaffe I'd wonder about a hearing problem he is loathe to admit to...but it is not.

26. If that's true it would be sad for the man, but I sure as hell hope he does not step down!
Let him stand before all of America, and in the debates - with his increasing confusion etc. until Obama wins on November 4th.

I certainly don't wish dementia on anyone, but if his mannerisms and goofy expressions help to build an even better case to the politically numb that Obama is far better prepared to lead - then so be it.

McBush can get excellent treatment while recovering from losing a grueling election.

How long would it be before Sarah Palin gets her way and starts the U.S. Constitution Party agenda that she and her husband have followed for years!

Or if anyone does not like religious terms he kissed Shrub's ass and is now a lying piece of crap laying on a hot sidewalk in the baking sun.
