Sen. Hagel doubts Palin's ready

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska on Wednesday became the nation's most prominent Republican officeholder to publicly question whether Sarah Palin has the experience to serve as president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

<...>

"I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

A senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Hagel has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war and had considered making his own run for president. He skipped the Republican National Convention in favor of a trip to Central and South America.

Moral: Hagel maybe right wing on social policy, but when it comes to foreign policy/national security don't piss Hagel off with BS.

2. Yeah, but
Obama is trying to win over people who maybe confused, not necessarily wingnuts, who are unlikely to vote for him no matter what.

3. Hagel has a lower threshold for bullshit than other GOPers--
he has trouble with the cognitive-dissonance aspect of being a Republican in this day and age, when you have to paste on a smile and knowingly support utter lies and insanity for the sake of the party. Which is why the Repub party here in Nebraska is so terminally pissed at Chuck--he just won't get with the program if he disagrees with it. Even our Governor succumbed to the pressure to vocally support the Palin choice--blech.

4. I definitely respect Chuck Hagel for being nonpartisan
It's too bad we couldn't get him to actively campaign for Obama like they got Leiberman to do for McCain.
