Every woman in the world would be offended by Palin charging victims for the rape kits
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 09:15 AM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
if they wanted their crime investigated. The cost I have seen bandied is approx $1000, so it's not like we're talking 10 bucks here.

It particularly victimizes poorer women who probably couldn't cough this up. The state of Alaska came up with a STATE law banning this practice because of Sarah Palin alone.

There is not one single plausible reason any rational person could come up with to defend this abhorrent abuse of rape victims.

I think this is THE game changer. Women just need to know about it.

1. Not just women, either - that's just disgusting.
If your house is robbed, do the police charge you if they dust for fingerprints? I see an implicit assumption that rape complaints are frivolous.

2. Couple that with McCain's opposition to kindergarteners being educated about inappropriate touching
You have the makings of a new meme: McCain-Palin want to protect sexual predators.

and you have the McCain-Palin Sex Offender Protection Act.

No way Obama should touch this, but it would be cool if an independent group did.

Abortion is a wedge issue, on which public opinion is divided, whereas rape and child sexual abuse are condemned by everyone except the perpetrators and Peter Wyngarde*

*=star of dodgy '70s TV detective shows Department S and Jason King, who in common with many TV stars of the period, was invited to cut a record album, which turned out to be one of the most jaw-droppingly bizarre albums in music history. One of the tracks was entitled Rape and, according to the British DJ Jonathan Ross, was "a celebration of rape around the world, with Wyngarde doing all the voices". Ross played many track from Wyngarde's album on his show, but drew the line at that one, saying that "if the subject matter doesn't offend you, the bit where Wyngarde does the Chinese accent probably will".

21. I take your point, but...
a) Most people favor access to abortion in cases of rape, incest, and threat to the mother's life.
b) If one can get an abortion in cases of rape, this will have the instant result that more rapes are reported, and more rapists brought to justice.

Therefore, a) the divisiveness is not as great as you portray it (recalling that one always has the option not to have the abortion), and b) more rapists will go to jail.

I call it a net positive, provided Obama does not explicitly align his campaign with it. This has to come from an outside group.

35. I don't think there's any need
The statements "children should be protected from child abuse" and "rape victims shouldn't have to pay for rape kits" are so uncontroversial that I feel there's nothing to be gained by adding a third statement ("abortion should be allowed in rape cases") that is somewhat more controversial. I don't know what the percentages are, so I'll just make some up, but say that 95% of the people agree with the first two statements and 75% with the third. Adding it would alienate 20% of the population without any counterbalancing gain, since I can't imagine that anyone agrees with the third statement but not the other two.

24. I don't see why his wife, Michelle, couldn't
discuss this...or HRC.

The fear of rape keeps women under control...imprisoned in their own homes. I don't know why you'd say he shouldn't discuss it????

It's a crime...and IMHO, a Hate Crime.

And almost every man, for that matter.

One of them needs to call out Palin for charging rape victims for rape kits.

For what? Because they have emergency contraception in them? She puts politics ahead of rape victims.

11. I do not know anyone ~~ male or female ~~ who is NOT offended by this.
What in the hell was she thinking? Some fundie non-logic about preventing an abortion which was a result of rape? If the woman is not tested, then she cannot claim she was raped and hence cannot have an abortion? WTF???

And...the end result is that a rapist goes free if the victim cannot pay to get the evidence against him...what a pile of shit that is.

27. She considers herself a 'Queen Bee...'
a woman who is now accepted into the once all male-dominated field of Government. Now in her sick mind, she is allowed to OPPRESS others. She, of course, can't pick on the big boys, so she feels entitled to make women suffer.

She, however, has not come face to face to Karma YET! She's in for one nasty surprise.

31. People from minority groups (and women are considered one)
that make it in the white man's world will sometime suppress others of their own group. This is done because if very many others also make it, that takes away their being special. They will say, "Look if I can do it, so can you." at the same time taking away every advantage they may have had and sitting up roadblocks in the way of those who share their minority identity. JMHO

15. Judging by the replies here...
...there's enough material to make a blockbuster ad that ends with "What's next from the McCain / Palin team, a Rapist's Bill of Rights?"

Really:

- charge victims for rape kits
- do not allow abortion even in case of rape or incest
- do not teach young children about inappropriate touching
- fire a law enforcement officer for aggressively pursuing sex crimes

It would be a fine line to make an ad that is hard-hitting, but not so much so that it turns people off. People can be very sensitive on this sort of issue, and it could be seen as a "smear". So maybe the punchline above, while tempting, would be better left unsaid. Maybe something more like "What is the real agenda here?" and leave it up to viewers to decide, after being presented with the simple facts.

Don't forget:

Rapists deserve a family, too! 'Rapists demand shared custody of their victims child.'

The rapist will forever be in the life of his victim....how would women feel about that?

Palin makes me ill....a true sociopathic sadist just like W.

16. Voiceover: If you were unfortunate enough to be the victim of a rape in Mayor Sarah Palin's town
she would ask you for $1000 to pay for the rape kit necessary to investigate the crime.

The state of Alaska didn't think that was right and passed a law to make her stop.

Sarah Palin: Victimizing the victims.

Money is not excuse either...she got 400,000 million in earmark money that she kept for the road to no where etc.

This is a huge deal and something I would tell people on and on...
