18. There was something very reassuring about that for certain.
I like people who are proactive. There is a pertinence to proactivity that soothes me.

20. I was phone banking tonite....
had one woman when I asked who she was voting for President....she said Palin...
Claimed she was a bra burning feminist...would have voted Hilary...but now will definitely vote Palin...

wierd thing was...she was undecided whether to vote for Gregoire (female) for WA Gov
...so her vote for woman irregardless made no sense...

folks are strange creatures sometimes...

14. They say Mondale got a short bounce from Ferraro too, apparently
I just wish they had told us that when they were wringing their hands about all the dumb women switching their votes to McCain just because he had a uterus on the ticket.

19. Mondale polled higher than Reagan after the first debate
Each convention got its bounce, and yes, Ferraro helped draw some numbers, but the debates were the true pivot point.

In the first debate, Reagan was showing his age, he was visibly confused and muddled (much more so than he usually packaged himself). Back then the punditocracy was limited to the Big 3 networks, a few on PBS, and CNN (which much fewer households had then than now, of course). So they were pretty upfront about Reagan's dismal performance.

The turnaround occurred in the second debate, where two things converged: Reagan was coached back into form, much more energetic. He recycled his canned "There you go again" tripe from 1980. Then Mondale's truth-telling moment: "Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did." Unfortunately, no one was sufficiently alarmed that the deficit was rocketing year after year in record numbers, and that Reagan broke his 1980 campaign promise to balance the budget by that year. Mondale was right, of course - Reagan signed the biggest tax increase in history in 1986, mainly by jacking up the FICA percentages and hurting the middle class. But keeping the Pentagon bloated did some real budget damage. But people reacted with typical knee-jerk anti-tax fear - an American tradition. (Obama is smart here - he knows emphasizing his middle class tax cut proposal is smart politically AND fairer economically - a twofer winner).

Mondale never recovered, and it was a horrible landslide against him.

As for Ferraro's debate with Bush, I remember his nasty and snide (well, they are the Bush clan) comment "I'm going to kick a little ass" a few days before the debate. He didn't. It was largely considered a draw. Ferraro - history-making potential and all - couldn't overcome Mondale's "gaffe" (Michael Kinsley said "a gaffe isn't when a politician lies - it's when he tells the truth"), and that was The End.

22. I think the Women shifting over to Palin was a meme that the corporate media
tried its bestest to build, but it didn't work....like most things that they try in order to get rid of Barack Obama. I'll be glad when they reach the acceptance stage.....sometime in January of 2009.
