CNN Refuses to Air Log Cabin Republicans
Television Ad

Images in Ad in Response to Politics of Fear and Intolerance Deemed Too Controversial

(Washington, DC)—CNN has informed the Log Cabin Republicans that it will not air their new television advertising campaign, which is a response to the politics of fear and intolerance. Unlike CNN, other broadcast outlets are airing the ad. The network claims that images in the ad are "too controversial." "We are deeply disappointed that CNN has refused our voices the opportunity to be heard. Last week we told the Republican Party that you cannot sugarcoat the vicious and mean-spirited platform, today we want CNN to know that you cannot sugarcoat the politics of fear and intolerance that lead to hate," said Log Cabin Executive Director Patrick Guerriero.

The 30-second commercial is being broadcast during the Republican National Convention in New York City and on other cable stations nationwide. The ad begins with footage from President Ronald Reagan's 1992 speech at the Republican National Convention in Houston. President Reagan said, "Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears." The commercial offers a clear choice for the GOP: follow President Reagan's lead by uniting Republicans on common beliefs or follow Jerry Falwell, Pat Buchanan and Rick Santorum's lead by dividing the GOP with an intolerant social agenda based on fear and exclusion. The ad closes with images of the Reverend Fred Phelps holding a sign that reads "God Hates Fags," at the funeral of hate crime victim Matthew Shepard.

The ad can be viewed at www.logcabin.org.

1. Maybe someone should tell
the Log Cabin guys that fear and intolerance is what pays the bills at CNN.

2. Wow.
That was pretty innocuous stuff for CNN to refuse to run it. One wonders if they would, or have, run the Swift Hoax ads, which have been proven to be a pack of lies and inventions.

Kind of scary.

3. Exactly! They made a decision to run Swiftboats for Bush
but not Log Cabins.

4. Wow. That was *very* tame.
Which bit did they deem offensive? Was it that it includes a picture of Pat Buchanan (a CNN regular) while the voiceover narrates "or will we *divide the American family*?

I expect that CNN wouldn't be too thrilled to run an ad criticizing one of their own celebrities.

5. utterly typical
The very same network which has employed Buchanan and Coulter finds that ad too contraversial. The very same network which invites Falwell on to spew hatred of gays finds that ad too contraversial. Pathetic.

8. My God People
This post was about CNN rejecting their ad...

Can you for once not turn a thread like this into mindless LCR bashing?

I don't agree with them or support them, but you are turning the issue away from the topic of the post, which is the fact they were still discriminated against.

<sigh>

9. I'm not big fans of the LCR either. You make a good point.
Vent your ire towards CNN. THEY are the ones not airing this ad. And yes, it's outrageous.

10. Just wait till Rick Santorum spews his Faith-based frothy mixture tonight.
Senator Rick Santorum was added at the last minute to tonight's speakers because the Bushistas are still worried about their hard-right christian base.

The log cabin Republicans have been cut adrift. It will become even more evident after tonight, as if they needed more evidence.

12. santorum is speaking in prime time???!!??
Wow. Allegedly, his speech was exiled to non-prime time.

Needless to say, ol' Rick will be foaming at the mouth about the evils of gay people marrying. To run the risk (and this is a huge risk) of allowing the 'phobes out in plain sight on prime time television is a bad sign for the Bush campaign. They're still afraid that they haven't locked in their base.

PS: thanks for the santorum reference. :-)

11. Shame on CNN
That was a good ad. Thought-provoking. I don't think it was offensive. Sure it showed someone holding a "God Hates Fags" sign, but the ad was against that hatred.

Too controversial? Not more so than many other political ads CNN has shown.

I seriously think CNN refuses to show this because the Republican party heads told them not to. This is Republicans criticizing Republicans. That's why they're not showing it.

I wonder if Fox is showing it. If they are, this may be the day that CNN sinks lower than Fox.

14. Gotta agree with you...
and I'll go you one further...read their mission statement.

"LCR: We believe in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility, and individual liberty."

Can you tell me which words in that statement are anything different than what a Democrat stands for?

Just curious.
