Need a fact check. Did McCain push for regulating Fannie and Freddie in 2005?

I will research myself, but thought someone here might know.

A McCain surrogate, during an interview on NPR this morning, said he did. He claimed McCain had pushed for legislation to regulate the companies; that he wanted them broken up and made into 'private' companies. The way he said it inferred they were government-run entities.

In addition, Politico reports that at least 20 McCain fundraisers have lobbied for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, pocketing at least $12.3 million over the last nine years.”
