1. This is really good, but shouldn't it say life begins at "conception"
instead of "contraception"?

:kick:

14. There is another problem with that. Life doesn't begin at conception.
Both the egg and sperm are alive, so life is a continuum. But why mess with the heads of those that don't use or even know the correct terms for the various parts of the pregnancy?

3. except the egg is dropped with morning after pill BEFORE the sperm gets there. doesnt work if
sperm has already made it. hence, morning after. so they dont want it even though it isnt conception adn they still call it abortion even though it isnt.

i believe i am correct on this. read about it about a year ago

5. Yes.
But they would rather have you believe the sperm finds the egg seconds after ejaculation. I'm sure a lot of people actually believe that, too.

8. I think sperm can survive in the female body for around 3-5 days.
I've read up to 7 but I don't know about that.

12. That's my mother, annabanana
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 07:44 PM by dancingAlone
Her image is what came to my mind after reading the OP, along with a lifetime of painful memories. A self induced abortion was my mom's last choice, after desperately trying for months to find a safer course.

I don't know what to say. Stories, like my mom's, seem to have little impact on today's society. I guess they don't seem real, or most of them happened so long ago they don't seem to apply in today's reality. I was only 7 when it happened, but I can assure you, it still impacts my life every day.

For anyone who hasn't figured it out yet (though I doubt there are many here), Sarah Palin is a selfish, self righteous woman, and a bigger threat to American women than any man I can think of.

Edit to add: That's my mom in my avy.

23. Thank you
I saw it in Ms mag, myself, the day I was finally told how my mom had actually died. I was just a kid at the time, and horrified, and it has never stopped haunting me since, either. Even through many stages of denial; not really believing, but hoping that the woman in that picture was not my mom - that it must be a mistake - that it was some other anonymous woman. It was 1993 when I was given absolute proof that it really was her -

21. I am so sorry, dancing. .
Of course I knew she was somebody's daughter, wife, mother, sister. I am sorry if the image causes you pain. I know it would cause me pain.

The fact that desperate, dangerous illegal abortions, whether self-induced or under some nominal medical care are the inevitable result of restrictive abortion laws seems to have been largely forgotten. I hope that my dream that abortions remain safe, legal and rare isn't thwarted by the sad, regressive turn that our Country has taken.

Again, my sincere apologies.

24.  Please, annabanana,
don't feel badly. You've done nothing wrong.

I just wasn't expecting to see that picture today. I have (seen it) so many times over the years, and will again and again, I'm sure, for the rest of my life. It is part of my life, whether I like it or not. There is no changing it, nor is there a way of bracing myself for it when it comes up. And it does hurt, still. There are days when it hits me so hard I just can't believe it all really happened. I want to pinch myself and wake up from the nightmare that has been my life.

But your use of it here today is absolutely in sync with my own feelings. I don't say a lot about my mom. I don't know how, or what exactly to say, even though I wish I could. A year ago I would have closed my browser and pretended not to have seen this thread at all. But I know that Sarah Palin is dead WRONG. I KNOW this. And she's got to be stopped.

There is no good side to what happened to my mom. Not one tiny factor that could be construed as a silver lining, a moral lesson, or a happy ending. Nothing about it was right, or good, or meaningful. And I will do anything, within my power, to fight against Palin and others like her, to ensure that my daughters, and my friend's daughters, and my enemy's daughters, never need suffer the fate that was my mother's.

25. Thank you for the hug, seabeyond.
I felt it right through the internets, and appreciate it.

If people could just understand how much they are risking. I am relatively young - a hockey-mom type, with kids in High School. And still living with a tragedy from the pre-Roe era. It was not that long ago.

If a correction is updated and I find the link I'll post it. I don't use Digg, but I guess any update will be posted there first. Interested DU'ers might keep an eye out for a corrected version on one of those two sites.
