Obama Raised More Than $66 Million In August

Obama Raised More Than $66 Million In August

By Greg Sargent - September 14, 2008, 9:42AM
An Obama aide this morning sent over his fundraising number for August: More than $66 million, topping his previous best month of $55 million by $11 million or more.

The astonishing haul means Obama is more than on track to raise the $300 million or more that the campaign had intended to raise for the general election -- a total that required him to raise over $50 million a month, which he's succeeded in doing.

The total suggests that McCain's gains, and the choice of Sarah Palin, helped galvanize and expand Obama's donor base: The campaign reports adding half a million new donors this month. The haul could also help put to rest lagging questions about the strain that opting out of public financing had put on his fundraising operation.

(emphasis added)

What to make of those polls?

2. Obama raised nearly $20 million more, that is
if McCain's numbers are true.

3. McCain is locked into public financing.
He gets $84 million from the end of the Republican convention until election day. That's it. No outside donations. However, the RNC and 527 groups can pick up the slack.

I suspect Obama's ads are going to absolutely swamp McCain's in the final weeks of the campaign.

The RNC's cash advantage

DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney says the party raised more than $17 million and has $17.5 million on hand, having spent more than $28 million last month, largely on the Democrats' ground game.

That cash figure is a fraction of the $110 million a Republican official says it has, which includes transfers of money McCain is no longer allowed to spend and money from state fundraising vehicles.

The disparity shows the Republicans' continued edge with the wealthy donors who can give in five-figure chunks.

The party money, though, is not worth as much as the campaigns' hard money, because it can't be spent as directly on the campaign, particularly when it comes to media. That was illustrated last month by RNC-funded ads that included confusing, digressive attacks on random Democratic senators, including Byron Dorgan, to fulfill campaign finance rules.

The GOP money will, however, finance an extensive field effort.

8. True, but the RNC has to decide whether to spend it all on the Presidential campaign
Or to support beleaguered Republicans down-ticket. The DSCC has $18M more in the bank than its GOP counterpart, while the DCCC has $42M more than its counterpart.

6. We have three Presidential debates, and 1 Vice Presidential debate
in between those debates I suspect you are correct that Obama ads will come out in full force

10. The polls are fake.
The calls are re-directed to a boiler room at AT&T or Verizon and people answer like they're told.
