Obama raises $66 million in August--smashing previous one month record.

WASHINGTON--The Obama campaign raised $66 million in August--a new record--besting the $55 million previous monthly best set last February. Obama also added 500,000 new donors, according to Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

Obama opted not to take $84 million in public funding for his general election campaign-- because the Obama team was confident they could raise more. McCain took the $84 million check. Besides the Obama and McCain presidential warchests, each campaign also benefits from money raised by the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee.

McCain raised $47 million in August, more than double his previous best month, fueled in part by a $10 million donation surge triggered by adding Sarah Palin to his ticket.

3. Can someone go over the finance rules for me?
Okay, Obama's rejected public financing-- does that mean that the different rules governing primary and general election funds is different for him? Would the people who maxed out the $2,300 limit during his primary have a new limit to max out for his general election? Thanks for any explanations you guys can give.

Also, it'd be interesting to count up just how much money he's raised so far in general.

8. If you gave Obama $2,300 for the primary, then you can give him another $2,300

...this month (September).

Let's hope September is a good month, too.

The thought of Sarah Palin being in control of nuclear weapons motivated me to donate more to the Obama campaign.

She may view an apocalypse as a good thing because it involves the return of Jesus.

This is really bad!

(just trying to head the concern trolls and nay-sayers off).

Hard to make that number a negative, but we've got some talented pessimists on this board.

9. the more they lie!
I gave money this month and I normally don't as it is harder and harder to pay monthly bills, but I looked at it this month as an investment in my future!!

12. B-b-b-b-b-but some wingnut blogger said he'd raise, like, a gazillion bucks.
So really, he failed to meet expectations. Which means this is good news for McCain.

13. I wonder how much of Obama's money was fueled
by McLame adding Palin to the ticket - I'm betting more than the amount McLame got for doing it!

15. When the September numbers are released....
...we'll have a better sense of how much Democrats were motivated by oppositon to Sarah Palin.

Personally, I thought I was done donating for the year, but then watching Sarah Palin's convention speech caused me to donate $300 more to Obama-Biden.

16. But the super trustworthy MSM said that Obama fundraising was "anemic"
That he made the wrong choice by not accepting public financing! That McCain had outwitted him!

Could the MSM...be...wrong?
