They're going to turn Biden loose on MCain (finally!)

Biden prepares for bigger campaign role

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP) — Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden is planning a more prominent role to help validate Barack Obama among white working-class voters and criticize the Republican rival he has long called a friend.

Republican running mate Sarah Palin is soaking up the campaign spotlight with magazine covers and joint rallies with John McCain that draw thousands, while Biden has had a more traditional role of second fiddle to the man at the top of the ticket. But the campaign envisions a new role for its No. 2 in helping make the closing argument against McCain.

Biden privately told reporters traveling with him last week that Palin was a smart political choice who has changed the race but is not prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The Associated Press is not among Biden's traveling press, but the off-the-record comment Tuesday was described by two people who were there and confirmed by a senior campaign official.

Biden's focus will be on McCain, not Palin, campaign officials say. They are calculating that the election will be determined on voters' feelings about Obama and McCain. Biden is in a unique position to help convince voters that McCain is the wrong choice, they say, because of a relationship that goes back even beyond their 22 years of working together in the Senate

(snip)

Part of Biden's appeal as a running mate is his comfort in debating rivals and tearing them down — something that is not always Obama's strong suit, although the Illinois senator is taking a more aggressive tone in the campaign's final weeks.

I'm good with that! :-)

In the meantime- here's the sum total of McCain/Schmidt's game plan between now and the debates:

4. Now that "Fun Steve" is dead,
the McCain campaign is being run by a flesh-eating zombie.

I, for one, think we will win without the zombie vote.

5. I am glad that the Obama campaign grasps this concept:
They are calculating that the election will be determined on voters' feelings about Obama and McCain.

Palin is distraction and misdirection and the Republicans must love the attention she is getting because all the time spent on her is less time for Obama to get out his message. Yes, it's about Obama and McCain.

15. McPalin are campaigning as a team. Attack them as a team
Whenever she lies, McCain is usually standing right there, so he is endorsing the lie. You can attack Palin through McCain because McCain has to own everything she says. When Palin lies, they are both lying and Biden can't let them get away with it.

It isn't that hard. It goes something like this. "I see that Senator McCain and his running mate were campaigning together yesterday and they said this ... Well folks, I'm here to tell you that facts matter. We can have a debate about the issues, but when Senator McCain or his running mate make us their own 'facts', that is called lying."

It doesn't matter which lips the lie came out of. McCain must own them all.

17. Nice!!! Now we need to work that into what they are saying on the stump
If they play this right, inside two weeks, that will be a primary media narrative, "What happened to the straight talk"? and that could heavily influence the debates.

It is very easy for the debate moderators to go after the factual questions. "Mr. X, you said this -- let me quote you -- you said this on xxx date in xxx city. But people who have researched this are saying that simply isn't true. Do you want to amend the record now?"
