18. Gore's problem in the first debate was the media's obsession with his body language. He

sighed impatiently, fidgeted at some of bush's reponses, and that's all the media could focus on. I remember one hushed broadcaster (Doris Kearnes Goodwin?) saying, "I don't believe he realizes the camera is on him." And I knew RIGHT THEN we were in trouble. The big news from that first debate was that Gore was "aloof and arrogant." In the next debate Gore overcompensated and then of course was "wooden and stiff." The issues were completely overshadowed by this preoccupation with how Gore presented himself.
