I told my Republican Aunt & Uncle that I'm voting for Obama!
They've bought into every Democratic/Bill/Hillary conspiracy theory for decades. Diehard Republicans - the only ones in the family.

They tried to tell me to "think as if you own a corporation, who do you trust to run it? The new, charismatic guy or the one with the experience?" I told him "the charismatic guy who doesn't make rash decisions." I also mentioned that McCain's "experience" was not relevant to being president. I told him that through my work with the folks on Capitol Hill, I knew that McCain had few friends and had a serious 'plays well with others' problem.

They countered that only someone who has been to war, can truly hate it. I told them that McCain shouldn't have supported this war and said we'll be there 100 years. I then underlined that being an aviator was very different from being a grunt.

They are relieved that Hillary didn't get the nod because not only do they hate her with the heat of a 1000 suns, but they think she would be tougher to beat.

So, I changed no minds, but I did let them know that this person is voting Obama and why. McCain's the wrong man for the job on every level.

1. They really have no good reason.
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 03:14 PM by YOY
That's what gets me. There is NO good reason to vote for McCain and Palin. I honestly cannot think of one.

They give "whats" but not "whys".

I could think of reasons to vote for Repukes at different times...but not now and not in this race.

2. They even tried to convince me that Cindy McCain is an admirable person because of charity...
contributions!

It didn't work.

3. All "whats". No issues. No substance. No "whys".
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 03:18 PM by YOY
Just sad. All my Obama-Biden reasons are "whys" and a few "whats" to follow up in detail.

4. $$$$$$$$$$$. It's always the money.
Even if they SAY it's "pro-life" or "fighting terrorism"; IT'S THE MONEY.

6. But they never say that...and never in exact words
They alway pretend that there is some nobler reason behind it all.

It just leads me to say that those who act like the most important colors are red, white, and blue only care about one color: Green...and apparently don't care that the "Green" is de-valuating as we speak due to their actions.

Not only a mom, but a HOCKEY MOM! And she eats mooseburgers and stuff!

What the hell is wrong with you?

If they regularly listen to Limpballs, O'Leilly, et al, then that explains it....
maybe.

My family is like that as well. Republicans are the "adults in the room" and Democrats the "whiny, pansy, pussies."

They live in an alternate Universe. They HATED - HATE - the Clintons. They believe every single piece of crap spewed by the right about taxes and other issues.

They DON'T have money. That's why it's amazing that they don't ever vote in their best interest, but they don't see that it IS in their best interest.

The right frames lies brilliantly. Say the same thing, over and over and over again and eventually everyone will believe it and it may even manifest. LOL.

If they're exposed to any of the right-wing brainwashing through Faux, Limpballs, etc., that's the only way I can even begin to wrap my brain around it.

The right lies and brainwashes, and it works.

7. They clearly live in a smaller world than I do.
They're are kind, gentle people, who cannot invision the world beyond their own experience in it. It's a much smaller world than the one I live in.

"If you work hard, you'll be successful." Republicans refuse to acknowledge the obstacles to success in our society. That working hard often isn't enough.

10. "a smaller world." Yes, that's it.
I see what you mean and agree.

Perhaps that explains the whole "bootstrap" mentality, but even some of my family members have, in years past, used food stamps and other state-run assistance programs.

Now, their mentality is that, "I don't want to pay my hard-earned money just so someone else can lay on their lazy ass."

They live in a small world, without any memory evidently. LOL.

5. All my uncles and aunts were conservatives as far as I knew,
and so I tried to never discuss politics with them. If any were still alive, I suspect at least some would be going for Obama, because they weren't FOOLS.

8. This sentence is telling

They tried to tell me to "think as if you own a corporation, who do you trust to run it? The new, charismatic guy or the one with the experience?"

This sentence is telling. There are too many people with this mentality. This is our country it is not a corporations. Corporations are, by design, kingdoms. The person at the top does whatever they want while the rest of the people just do as they're told. While corporations have shareholders meeting they don't really want to hear what the shareholders say. This is why so many of them will kick out a shareholder who wants to discuss things they do not like about how the corporation does business. Our country should not be run like a corporation because it is supposed to be a democratic republic which takes into consideration the needs of its citizens as well as what the citizens have to say.

The fact that Republicans cannot tell the difference between the two says a lot about why they're so lousy at governing and why the country is in such a shitter after all these years of Republican rule.

Regards

11. what i like to think of regarding experience
is that the captain on the titanic had 30 years of experience. he was on his last voyage. and his 30 years of experience told him that he could avoid any icebergs. his experience was wrong. experience isn't the end all be all in decision making. there is experience, and then there is judgement. like knowing when to listen to the people around you who know more than you do.

12. I told them that being president is, in large part, an attitude. Experience is worth only so much.
McCain does not have the right temperament for the job in any way.

Obama is deliberate, he's not going to start a war just because his bowels are acting up.

FDR: I've got it!
ER: Folks say I've got it!
FDR: Go 'Bama!
ER: Indeed! I wish dead people could vote in our state...

13. Precisely. Corporations are run to benefit shareholders--especially the largest ones.
Citizens in a democratic republic are not shareholders. Republicans need to be reminded of this.
They've bought into the corporate meme that government should be run to benefit corporations--
which is at the heart of fascism.

14. I feel so at home here...
I'm going to be posting lots of these types of threads beginning, oh, in about two weeks from now. I feel for you, Mookie, (mets fan and all-you did have a mets avatar once, no? my hubby is a mets fan). His family is very conservative. Mine, to a degree, is too. I will be leaving my nice, liberal friends in Mexico and heading to my conservative family. The only safety is my sister and BIL (Obama supporters); my mom and her GF (lifelong repukes who've recently switched sides...please, no jokes okay?); my dad, who is somewhat apolitical; and my uncle and his partner (hardcore Dems). My husband's family in NJ is conservative, but I won't be under their roof.

The week in California is another story all together. I love them to pieces, and thank god my husband will be there to keep us from verbally killing each other.

I'm going to Hyde Park tomorrow to get water from the stream by Eleanor Roosevelt's house in case I need to be politically re-purified after visits to my aunt and uncle.

Take care!

16. Good for you! I just spent last night with MY Republican Aunt & Uncle, who
are about as open-minded as a cement wall. Nice people (the aunt is my (deceased) mother's younger sister) ... but vapid. I don't try to change them very often because a) I get too angry - and so do they, and b) again, they're closed-minded. And I don't want to sever the relationship. But it's still f-ing hard not to!
